My boys started with a 22. We practiced a bunch with it.. at 8 they shot their first deer with a 243.
I didnt let them shoot the 243 until they were shooting at a deer. I didnt want them flinching. they never noticed the recoil because they were excited. I went over the steps in the stand just like I did when they shot the 22.

mack jr #1 seemed to be born with a rifle on one hand and a shotgun in the other - he was/is a highly disciplined shooter. killed his first pig at 4, first doe at 5, and first buck at 7. all with a .243 i gave him. after that he “claimed” my .308.
mack jr #2 has zero interest in hunting (mama’s girl).
mack jr #3 is a real wildman with a gun that needs to be CAREFULLY watch and has a ways to go before he is safe. he could wreck scrap iron.

I started shooting them at 6 and killed a deer at 7.

My son started at 6. We bought a Remington Model 7 youth 243 with the wooden stock. I cut several inches off and added a Limbsaver Butt pad. When he out grew the stock we got him a synthetic adult stock. He's 24 now and just decided to hunt with a larger rifle this year, because his wife is hunting with the 243. But today I'd probably go the adjustable stock AR route with the 6.5 or 6.8 like many have already suggested.

I regrettably never took my daughters hunting but I started my oldest grandson deer hunting when he was 9. I started him shooting a real gun (22) when he was 7. He was very small for his age. At 9, I bought him a 7/08 Savage Axis youth and a couple boxes of Hornady reduced recoil loads. He is 12 now, still small, and still uses the same gear. He has killed about 10 deer so far. While the reduced recoil loads do dampen the recoil, make no mistake about it. It is still a high powered rifle and it still kicks like one. Make sure you get a scope with a long eye relief. A black eye will certainly not go over well.

Mine started at 5 with a .22 single shot, then scope. At 8 he killed two hogs with a .223 Model Seven. Shot at a few deer but never got one. At 12 he made his first kill (3 pt) with a 700 .270.
Make sure you have ear protection for her. Know of a few kids that don't like to shoot at all because of the noise.

Never shot a 7-08, how’s the reduced recoil loads compared to a .243 in regards to felt recoil?
Still noticeably more kick from the 7-08, even in lighter loads.
