Went red snapper fishing out of Fourchon, what am I doing wrong

My first time without a guide (trip was on 8-12). Did it myself and we had two of us. We did come home with four but it was a lot more work than I thought going in. Actually caught the last two at our last stop on a baby rig, more like a big pole in around 60 feet of water. I will say that the few boats I saw hooked up to rigs close to us throughout day didn't appear to be hauling in fish either.
My past experiences (with guides) has been drop twice and come up with two fish. We did catch a few cobia so an all around good trip but just wondering what I may be doing wrong as far as catching the snapper. We stopped at about 5-6 rigs total with depths between 60-100 feet. Caught all but one snapper in the 60-70 foot range.
Fishing with cut pogies. Used a whole one a couple of times too.
Also tried to chum for mangrove snapper at almost every stop and didn't see any come up at all. I went on a mangrove trip only once before and it seems like every stop when we chummed the water they would shoot out like torpedoes from under the rigs.
I will say that I am brand new to rig fishing without guide so is it just that I picked bad rigs? Or is it a little harder right now due to them being fished all summer long? Thanks for any input. May try again this weekend.

- use different baits. they can be wanting one thing some days
- dead zone - sometimes they arent there.
- they have been hit hard but still plentyfull when you find them
- sometimes they arent tight on the platform. fish 30yards off sometimes as the base extends wider the deeper you are
- try ALL sides of the platform
- ive not caught in 60-100ft but hit 120 and got one every drop

The bigger snapper in good numbers are deep right now. Better off trying to mangrove and cobia fish and those depths currently.

You weren't deep enough for red snapper. Go out a little further...150 to 200'. I use live bait for grovers

definitely try all 4 sides of the rig not just tying up to one
they are a little deeper now as noted above
also keep moving if they aren't there go to another one

live bait for groves and cut bait for snapper. 115' water
I caught my snapper 2 weeks ago on live bait (caught at the platform) about 20yrd off the corner while the boat next to us couldnt get much on cut bait. 60' water

The Feds were right. Y'all have caught 'em all.

It's not easy to catch bigger than barely legal snapper in shallow water right now, that's for damn sure.

Not massive 20lbs but I'd say 20". That's those 8lb mangroves down there messing up your judgment haha. The small mangroves in between are 12" as reference for the bigger ones.

Pickle, you caught that in your frontier, BAW?

No but I did run out just as far (35 miles) in the frontier this year on another snapper run

I've always used the sonar around the rig first to see if I can spot them that way.
For reds, you want to be in, at least, 100 feet of water.
The best luck I've had was with cut squid. Mangroves, live shrimp. But have caught them on cut pogie this past Faux Pas.
You have to work the entire column, start at the bottom and work up. Decent size reds, at least 80 feet. Mangroves, I've caught from 10 feet to 50 feet down.

When in doubt pull the shrimp out.

One problem with the close rigs is they get hit hardest since they are close. You tend to catch smaller more educated snapper there. Fish rigs in 200-400 feet and use a line counter to find them. Start at 120' and go down in 20' increments until you find them. Once you find them snapper on every catch.
Also try different bait I like to grab Tuna bellies off the cleaning table at the marina the night before. However I use trout bellies a lot. The tougher belly meat and skin stays on the hook a lot better than pogies and squid.

Both on the good days. That's the same hull I have. Blazer is the old Kenner and frontier is the new
