No problem. Just keep an eye on the forecast and horizon. Don't think because it looks far away that it can't mess up where you are at.
Anything over 2s at 5 second period won't be the day for you.

We usually fish in 200' or more most of the time for Snapper. Try to bring pogies and squid next time out. Pick a depth and stop. If no bites drop 10' at a time till you find them. We always send someone to the bottom also to see if they down there. You'd be surprised what's down there.

That's far out of cocodrie. South if last island you get to 50 at 15 miles and 100' around 35 miles. I wouldnt push it much further in a 22' unless you had a buddy boat.
40 or so miles south of fourchon (st 179 area) is 160'

What kind of leader were you using? Length and test?

My biggest snapper this year have came drifting cut bait back with 0 weight. I have a smaller boat and fish nearshore.

I use 30 lb fluoro. I never really have problems with them breaking off, the leaders just need to be replaced more frequently. I pre-make a bunch before every trip.

I know that the guys that can go way offshore will say that leader size doesn't matter, but the close spots have been hammered all year. Leader size makes a difference.

You can also try drifting a knocker rig back. The bigger fish are often higher in the water column.

Make sure you have 2 or 3 different baits to try as well.

Thanks, I have some 30 lb and I will make some rigs with them before this weekend. What baits do you find work best? I know I can get pogies and sardines, not sure what else.

Live bait, do croakers work well? I know I can get croakers and shrimp. Not sure what else.

I went on a guided trip out of Mississippi and I remember catching bait on tiny hooks before going to islands. Trip turned out to be a bust bc all we caught were sharks, but I had never caught bait like that before. Do any of you do this? If so what should I be targeting and what is best to catch them with.

I have a cast net but haven't used it. I hear about people catching live pogies and stuff with them but I feel like I should practice with it a decent amount first before depending on it.

You're talking about sabiki's. Like 6 small hooks down a line with a weight at bottom. Jig it around a rig for hard tails, hornbellies etc. Thats more for tuna bait.

I went on a guide trip in Fl. last summer. I brought my wacky work(bass) rig just for fun in case we ran into small fish.

When we got to the black Snapper(mangrove) spot, I decided to use my rig instead of the guide's. He laughed at me. Mine had 18 lb Gliss with 15 lb fluoro leader. I got way more bites than anyone else in the boat and only broke off one. I also continued to get a bite or two after they stopped biting for the rest. One of the ones I caught was his boat record.

This guy fricks. I have not experimented with going any lighter, but I imagine you could since most of the time the circle hook is in the corner of the mouth anyways.

I use sabiki rigs sometimes. I have had good look using pinfish, sand perch, and smaller ruby reds.

Get that cast net out and learn how to throw it. Pogies are good bait, and you can chop them up and use them for chum too.

I always buy a box of frozen cigar minnows in case we can't find fresh bait. If you don't need it you can use it for chum.

Go to sams and get you a couple big bags of macaroni. Boil it and bring that to the rigs and chum up the mangroves

if you pull up to a structure you can see, more times than not, boats have hit it hard over this year. so you wont get many bite. but they are there. Best to hit wrecks. Pogies fall off very easily so put something else on the hoot as well so it isnt just a bar hook after the first strike. use artificial jigs as well. will usually pull out the more aggressive snapper. Our rule of thumb is if we are pulling up smaller snapper, there isnt going to be anything much bigger at that location so we will move.
