Why wouldn't it have a recoil lug like a regular bolt rifle?

The lockup on the Savage is pretty similar to the Blaser. I think Savage missed the boat. They should have done away with the receiver and integrated the bolt rails in the stock like the Blaser. They then could have added the rail directly to the barrel and attached the barrel to the stock with a single large Allen screw. That would have made the rifle shorter and handier with a quick change barrel option.

Why do you guys care about the weight of the gun walking the 400 yards from your SxS to your box stand? I get it’s not light and I’m wondering if maybe they vastly over engineered it to keep costs low and for liability reasons? As in used a heavier more expensive metal then something better?

I think it looks pretty dang solid though.

Because some of us don’t hunt that way. It’s actually under engineered. Not much innovation at all.

Is it blaser or blauser? It’s a sweet gun and very lite. The one I saw you could change the barrels, but I thought it was extremely high dollar.

Look that and this is all in jest, but if you hunt the south and complain about gun weight you need to change up from 12 oz curls to something a little better. I routinely use a Savage 10 muzzleloader and it’s 9 lbs without a scope. It’s not something to complain about. Now the guys out west maybe. But even so most guys aren’t hiking that far with a rifle.

I’m no savage fan boy, do their other rifles generally weight more?

Have a WW2 Steyer rifle in 8 mm with a straight bolt. Little gun kicks like mule but fun to shoot

I walked several miles checking clearcuts Saturday morning, in the south. A lighter rifle makes a difference in several ways, but mostly when slung over the shoulder to me.

The issue with it being heavier, is that makes it a tweener. I carry a Remington model 7 compact a lot and it’s extremely easy to maneuver around in tight spaces, fast to shoulder, and really well balanced being shorter light sporter contour. Generally the intent of making a shorter rifle is to sacrifice some long range capability to make it easier to handle, where fast free hand shots and follow ups are anticipated. They kinda got the worst of both worlds with a short but heavy barrel. Guess since it’s a savage you could always swap it but then you’re two grand into a gun that would really excel shooting hogs or running walkers.

I still hunt a lot and keeping your rifle in your hand is important abs much easier with a light rifle. My NULA comes in at less than 6 pounds all up.

Just bought a Blaser R8 last month so I have no need for it. They literally copied the Heym SR30 locking system lol. Also, with the the Blaser, barrel and bolt changes are easy and don't require headspacing. I have the 6.5 creed and a 9.3x62 barrel. They use the same bolt head so it's just 2 captured bushings in the stock that you loosen, pull the barrel out, and screw the bushings in the new barrel.

I’ll tell you how to get one for cheap, or at least cheaper. Find a used Forbes rifle or Colt Light Rifle. Buy it and send it to Melvin. For about $700 he’ll rebarrel it and give it the full NULA treatment. You’ll have a NULA for about $2k instead of $4k.

Never heard of them prior. I guess this old dude might’ve led to the Rem mountain rifles in the 1980’s?

Melvin Forbes has a great history. Read some of his articles and more importantly put your hands on one of his rifles one day.

I almost bought a used colt light rifle to send off to him not long ago. Cabelas had a .30-06 on the rack forever. I had to come to grips with the fact that I just can't spend money on a rifle

Not really. It is a clone of the Heym SR30. Blaser uses a 14 "finger" radial locking design. The Heym used the ball bearings.

Well, it’s a direct clone of the Heym and similar to the Blaser. They are both concentric lockup systems where either bearings or small flanges protrude into indentations in the barrel. That is one type of system and is different from the standard bolt head and bolt body with a cam that turns the lugs found on most other types of rifles.

What I like about it, you can mount your scope how you want it and not have to worry about clearance for your bolt handle.
