Aptly named the Savage Impulse. Straight pull bolt that can be changed from right to left handed. As a lefty I like it as it’s a PITA to get lefty guns.

Lefty here as well and it can be a pain finding a bolt action rifle.

That being said, I love the design of this Savage Impulse and would buy one in a heartbeat but I was surprised when I went to Savages website only to find they don’t chamber one in 7mm MAG. If they did, I’d be buying one ASAP.

Wonder why they don’t chamber one in 7 mag? I know some on this board don’t like a 7 Remington Mag but I have a lot of confidence in this cartridge and have hunted with a 7mag for 30 years now.

I see they make the Impulse in .243, 6.5cm, .308, 30-06, .300 WINMAG and .300 WSM. Out of those cartridge I’d get the .300WSM. I’ve always been interested in this cartridge but have never bought one. I’ve shot a .300WSM many times and I love it. My older brothers father in law has one and have shot it often. Since there isn’t one chambered in 7 mag, another reason I’d go with the .300wsm over the .300 winmag is the short action.

Thanks for posting the link. Very interested. Of course I’ll have to get with .257WBY because the next hunting rifle I planned on buying this spring was going to be a WBY magnum. The 7mm WBYMAG or .270WBYMAG.

PAGING .257wby, what are your thoughts?

Doubt there’s a actual reason other than they can’t chamber everything, and the big sellers are gonna occupy a few of those slots off the bat. 7mag has taken a noticeable hit to rifle options recently, presumably due to more bigger manufacturers jumping in on 28 nosler.

Personally I wouldn’t want this in a big magnum caliber like 300wsm, this gun to me should be carried and fired from the shoulder, should be shooting lighter recoiling rounds to stay on the sights, and have a shorter lighter barrel to be maneuverable. This would be perfect in something like 7mm-08. Everyone makes a long range rifle now that weighs 10 lbs and can print off bags, savage included.

As somebody said earlier, I'm not sure why southern hunters care about weight.

Walk driving is picking up popularity with a certain crowd. Will explode if they ever tighten up on dogs in MS, and that’s coming up more and more. I walk a lot for various reasons, and if I don’t need the weight why would I want it? I could just as easily ask why southern hunters care about 1000 yard ballistics and match grade bull barrels.

Kind of my thought.

I usually only walk a 1/2 mile in and 1/2 mile out. 10.5 lbs of rifle, scope and ammo isn’t that big of a deal, even when I carry a pack. But I’m always thinking about other hunts like out West, and if I ever make a trip like that, I don’t want to have to buy another rifle and just be able to choose from the ones I have. Also, I sometimes do a little walking around after getting out of the stand, and 10.5 lbs. isn’t exactly handy.

You never NEED it, but having a little weight isn't a bad thing if you aren't backpacking the rifle in. I dont think 9 pounds should be a point of concern for most people.

It's not. I like a little heft to my rifles anyway.

9lbs isn’t that big a deal, it’s more that this rifle could weigh much less, they just chose for it not to so it would make pretty holes in paper. Not just about ounces, being sold on the premise of being a modern brush gun means it would need to be balanced, almost above all else.
