Aptly named the Savage Impulse. Straight pull bolt that can be changed from right to left handed. As a lefty I like it as it’s a PITA to get lefty guns.

LINK to video and story.

I thought it was gonna be goofy but that actually looks badass, the ball bearing lock up is pretty slick too.

Did he say at the end of the video that the entire action is aluminum?

Did I understand that correctly?

I really don't understand why straight pull bolt guns haven't taken off

I’m intrigued, but at 8.8 pounds I’ll pass until they get a bit more svelte.

The bolt locks up in the barrel. Therefore, the receiver is merely a housing for the bolt and serves no purpose with regard to containing the pressure of the fired round and can be made as lightly as possible.

Which, makes it all the more disappointing that it is an 8.8 pound pig. That rifle could be made very lightly.

This is correct. I have a rifle that uses the same concept in order to be able to switch barrels easily, although it is not a straight pull (same company does make a straight pull).

when the first straight-pull bolt guns were introduced to the US and Canada before WWI, they were good performers and accurate infantry rifles...until they went to the trenches. They failed miserably in that environment and the poorly, rapidly mfr'ed ammo at the time failed to cycle or was inaccurate. They were quickly replaced by the .303 Enfield and M1903 Springfield (30-06). After the war, straight-pull bolts had a bad rep on this side of the pond and there were plenty of surplus Springfields sporterized for hunting (along with winchester, browning, and remingtons).

Browning currently offers a straight-pull on the Euro market (the Maral) and 99% of Euro competition shooting is done with straight pull small caliber rifles.

1+. The Savage website doesn't list the outside diameter, but says it a "medium contour." It looks like a heavier contour to me. Since the barrel's only 22" long, there must be significantly more metal in its aluminum action than in the typical steel action. Regardless, it IS an interesting concept. It's been much too long since I found a new gun or cartridge interesting.

How is it any diiferent from an AR? Barrel extension is where the bolt locks and takes up the stress.

The bolt looks like the handle off an old crank-open/close window.

Isn’t there an extremely high dollar German gun with that? Named Blauser or something like that. The clip is designed in with the trigger guard.

The stress points is what I was wondering.

Stress points on an AR are straight back through the buffer tube

Stress point on a bolt action is the recoil lug and the action screws for the stock.

I would like to see how they designed that.
