A bunch of high schools in Cenla always have their football games on the Thursday night before squirrel season. Call it the squirrel bowl. Especially Buckeye Highschool in Deville, right outside of Dewey W. Wills WMA. Schools are closed today so everyone can get to the camp.

If I'm not mistaken they close the schools down and everything. I remember when I went to LSUE some guys from Ville Platte bitching that we had an exam on squirrel opening day.

yes. for years now.....the entire parish shuts down. schools are closed, businesses shut down (normally at noon), and hunters vacate the town to chase the bushy tails.

paul harvey had a section on it on one of his segments.

"do you believe that the parish of evangeline shuts down for the friday before opening day of squirrels?"

Yep, that's how it works. The only day my Ville Platte husband lets the kids skip their Lafayette school.

Used to be that way all over the parish when I was in high school. Now I think it's mostly Ville Platte that shuts down.

Still a lot of absences in the other parish schools, though.

You'd better believe it. It's a school holiday. Like literally in the school year calendar.

Well, not really, but it might as well be. It's more like when a city has a festival during the school year and that city's schools shut down the Friday of festival weekend. It's not an official parish wide school board holiday, but it kinda is.

Evangeline Parish doesn't frick around when it comes time to pop a cap in some squirrels.

Yeah, as mentioned above. Buckeye always shut down schools for it, and I'm sure a few others. LaSalle Parish didn't and it always pissed everyone off.

Hell in EP we had a day off for the start of Squirrel season during my middle and high school years.
