We hunt the Lorman area of Jefferson County. We had a great year. My daughter shot the biggest rack and weight buck we have taken in the last 14 years there on Nov. 27th, and he came on the plot and bumped a few does. December 5th I shot a nice 8 point. We shot most of our bucks in mid to late December, and that seemed to be the peak of our rut.

We had similar results in Claiborne county MS near Port Gibson. Sightings were slim but we did get a nice jolt of activity during Rut. I also hunt in Poplarville MS (Pearl River co), and we never even saw any sign of a rut this year (still open till 15th). We had a few daylight pic of bucks early on but now the only pics of bucks are at night and deer sighting in general were WAY off this year.

We hunted all year in Union Parish, and never saw a single rutting buck

We caw a few scrapes and rubs, but never once did anyone see a buck pushing a doe or anything. Very strange

We might be related. Both my parents grew up there, as well as their parents. I've got aunts and uncles and cousins all over that part of the state. Haven't been down there in about 5 years, since my last grandparent passed away. I miss going to Ezell's and First Baptist.

SW Mississippi and this year was terrible. Only one mature buck was seen during legal shooting hours.

Similar report as the OP in Jefferson County, MS
Very little rut action the first week of Jan, when it is usually fast action.
Saw several spotted fawns into November, which means they dropped way later than usual, which means they rutted later last year (which we also suspected).
We expect the same next year.

I had a good bit of rut activity from 12-26 thru 12-30 in Union Church, MS. Once the moon went full on 12-30, rut activity came to a screeching halt. We did have a decent amount of rut activity the third week of January. I was still seeing scrapes on the 31st when the season ended.

NE AL here and we started out like gangbusters. My nephew killed a big 8 pt the 3rd day of bow season. Two more in like 4 days right when gun season opened between me and him. He took one of his buddies and he got his first with a bow.

Then the same thing you experienced. Tons of nocturnal pictures and lots of sign everywhere, but nothing moving in the morning or in the evenings while we were in the stands. We saw a few of the same does (we think) every now and then, but even they were barely moving during daylight. Incredibly frustrating after the hot start we had. It's like the damn deer started working for the CIA at the end of November and had our phones and homes bugged and knew exactly when were gonna be in the woods .

Oh well. I guess that's just how it goes sometimes.

Sumter County , AL.

Saw more deer than we have in years. We select cut the pines 3 years ago (every 4th row) and burned last year.

Had several bucks on camera but most wouldnt come to a food plot until after dark. Hunted travel corridors and had some success. Carried 3 kids who had never hunted before and 2 of them got kills. Trying to get more kids into the outdoors is difficult at times but after they get there everyone of them enjoyed it. Hard to get them to put phones down and watch.

Full moon on Jan 1st and the end of January (secondary rut) hurt. I did see some rutting action in the middle of the day, but overall daytime movement was down. Bad luck with the moon phase this year.

Hunt Claiborne County Ms. We had one of our best years ever. Saw more quality bucks and a bunch of does. We did not have any acorns this year so they were pounding the plots.

I killed my biggest buck to date with a bow as well.

Been hunting the same piece in S Alabama (Monroe County) for 30 years now. Our club has a 2 buck, supposed to be shoulder mount type deer, limit and i managed my two this year as I do most years. I never sit food plots, and hunt pretty hard.
Most all our members, and all of our neighbors complained of way less deer sightings and most movement at night.

My thoughts, now having been a resident of south mississippi for 15 years since Katrina, I think Alabama is seeing the effects of the 2nd year of the baiting law.

We run one small feeder in the yard of our camp, just to feed the group of does that hang out in the yard, and its neat for the wives and children to see deer in the yard while we cook dinner.

Both bucks i killed this year were just slap full of corn. The last one I killed during our rut last week, was full of corn, which i was just shocked by during this time of year. I just dont see why the deer would need to move as much as they would normally need to if they have a set, known food source they can count on

Live in Pearl River county mississippi. We actually have plenty deer if you know where to look, they are just really hard to kill and just dont move during daylight much. That said, just about every piece of leaded timber land in the county has a feeder on it every 3 to 500 yards, and from my observations it really effects deer movement. I do a fair bit of bow hunting in the Bouga Chitto NWR, both on the Ms and La side of the river, and see way more deer activity in general in that swamp then I do on most of the leased timber land in pearl river county.
Just my observations

Agree. We haven't baited, but all our neighbors do. We definitely see the impacts. No matter how well our plots do, most of the deer start across the road and make their way to us well after dark. We'll likely need to throw corn to keep up. Habitat swings due to timber harvests haven't helped in the short run either.

Same here. Never saw intense rutting action. Only spikes and fork horns during the day. Not even many mature does, mainly yearlings. The 8-point I got came out with only about one minute of shootable light remaining.

I've seen more deer hit by cars this year than in recent memory. Went up 431 to Lake Eufaula and there were dead deer everywhere.

I’m hunting from 9-3 on these days.

Not saying you or anyone isn’t doing the same, but I’m not hunting a food plot unless I’m trying to kill a doe. Baiting isn’t anything new to Alabama, now it can just be right in front of you. If you’re trying to kill a mature buck sitting over a feeder in SE Alabama you’re doing it wrong in my opinion. I very rarely get day time pics of target bucks on my feeders. I just use my cameras to know there’s a good one to hunt. I tagged out this year, and none of them were eating corn or within a few hundred yards of it when I shot them.
