I mean, would you wait for it to maul you a little bit before shooting it? I don’t like pain.

Throw the radio collar the bear is wearing somewhere far away. Don’t keep it as a memento.

If it’s truly in self defense just drag it off into the woods and never speak of it again. Not worth the trouble to go through the proper protocol

I would report it. Take it to court if they try to punish you. One sentence argument- "If I was trying to poach a bear, I wouldn't have called the DNR to report it."

We the jury find the defendant Not Guilty.

I'd think claw marks on your face is an acceptable excuse. Other than that, you're screwed.

BS. A guy from new iberia got caught. his fine was 3k. Also just googled another one, 2500 fine and 100hrs community service, loss of hunting for a year. This one hurts a bit.

Hell it's more expensive to go on a legal guided hunt for bears.

i was going to say "shoot yourself in the arm, then place the gun in the bears hands", but your way is cheaper.

In the state of Louisiana if you shoot a bear or cougar/mountain lion and claim it was self defense you'd better have significant claw marks on your body. At least a green jeans told me that.

so shoot kill go get is paw and scrape your arm up.

Unless there's game cameras proving you were in the area or selfies poster online, you'll never be investigated.

If you shoot a bear, 2 things will happen. You either wound it or kill it. Walk away like you shot a bobcat.

I think most black bears in Louisiana have some sort of tracking device on them. Good chance they will know when one has been killed. I would try to film any encounter that results in your shooting then to show self defense.

I'm not buying that someone fought off a grizzly that really wanted to kill them.

How can they tell if it was not a threat without a video or you just being dumb and telling them? They can’t tell anything. Their only hope is to interrogate you for hours, break you down, and then you confess that the bear was not a threat.

I would treat this exactly like if you shot a person in self defense. When the green jackets arrive I would not tell them anything and say I want a lawyer. They will try to trick you to talk and get you to answer some small questions to get the ball rolling. I would answer nothing and keep repeating I want a lawyer.
