I've cooked wild hog a couple of times and we don't have a huge problem with them at our lease.... but I try to salvage the animal when I shoot one if possible.
Last year however I killed a sow that probably weighed about 180 lbs..... not a giant but not small... was going to butcher her until we noticed a nasty old would. she had been shot with a bow and about 6 inches of the arrow was still lodged in right below the spine... it was infected and rancid... needless to say we dumped her.
but that is not how we normally roll.

The property I hunt is covered up with them. We shoot any that we see (although we try to make as ethical of a shot as we can). I see them run deer off of a spot on a regular basis. We only keep small ones to eat. Big boars get dumped.
As fast as they multiply, I believe we will all have hog problems eventually. Even if you live in a neighborhood in town. There's only so much land and they will find food where ever they can.

comparing hogs to rats is comical.... rats have caused millions of deaths worldwide maybe billions since the dawn of time.
hogs.. even if you count deaths from bacon and gratons... is not nearly that

Then why shoot the largest one? A boar pig has the same reproductive capabilities regardless if its 100 pounds or 300lbs? From what I've been reading, nobody is trying to kill a trophy pig.

If I have time to identify them, I always shoot the sow
I'd rather have 100 boars running around than 1 boar and 10 sows
Sometimes, it happens so fast you just pick the shot and shoot

They are worse than rats. Other than people that live in filth, I don't often hear of people with massive rat problems they cannot solve. Pretty much everyone in Louisiana has a hog problem now.

They will be in the suburbs and cities within 10 years, in my opinion. I mean, what's going to stop them?

2. As someone who has killed more than a few coyotes, beavers, nutria, armadillos, hogs and other nuisance critters and varmints; I can tell you that its not practical or reasonable to expect or demand that every animal killed be eaten. That doesn't mean they aren't to be dispatched cleanly and treated respectfully, but eating isn't the only legitimate reason to kill an animal.
My thoughts quoted from another thread.

There's lots of homeless shelters, charitable organizations, etc. that would probably love to have a few hogs to cook for the people they are trying to feed on a daily basis.
All the ones I know of will not take hogs.

We have 100 acres in union parish. 1 hog has been killed off the property in the last 50 years. And only 3 have been seen on trail camera. I'm sure the time will come when they will be a nuisance on our property. When that time comes I will have plenty of sharp knives.

Wife and I were in a stand Saturday (her first hunt in 10 years) and she just wanted to watch the does. Saw about 30.
This dude came out of the woods at about 20 yards and the 7.62 went right between his eyes.
I’ll shoot every hog I see, but make sure it’s lights out quickly. I’d feel like an arsehole making an animal suffer, even if it is a hog.
ETA: the hogs are ruining our farmable land. They’re everywhere. I have a hatred for them that most people don’t understand.

Why not? They don't like brucellosis, tularemia, and a reservoir of other diseases? Hogs are hosts to about 30 types of bacterial and virulent diseases and 37 parasites. Sounds yummy.

Why are you commenting on a problem that you clearly don't/can't comprehend?

If I remember right some states without hogs have preemptively banned hog hunting to try and keep folks from having an incentive to move them
I think Kansas has done that
Not far from here is a large land owner that leases to hunters. He doesn't allow deer hunters to shoot pigs because he has hog dogs and does guided hog hunts. He also has been seen dropping trailer loads of trapped hogs off on the side of the road knowing that these people will eventually call him to come run his dogs there

Can't stand hogs. I shoot them to wound kill them and unless they fall or I see them close to my deer stands I leave em. And when I do retrieve them I dump them down the road. Use to call and find folks that want them. No one cares for them anymore and shelters, boys village, and such places don't accept them even if you skin it for them. It's a problem for sure. The meat even on a good woods sow isn't worth fooling with. Hunters that catch them and let them go should be fined and license revoked.
