This is something that has always bothered, confused, and angered me. I know a lot of people will intentionally gut shoot a wild hog so it will run off and die, and I know a lot of people who will shoot one and not make an effort to retrieve it. They say "its just a nasty pig." This goes against everything we learn at a young age as a hunter and conservationist. Others opinions on this topic?

Considering hogs are a massive invasive species and nuisance to wildlife and vegetation, id consider it wrong to not shoot them.

frick em they’re hogs. Only critter I feel this way about but I do clean all of them but the huge boars.

I also think it’s stupid to gut shoot them and they should be shot just like another animal. If you want to throw it in the gut pile afterwards then that’s fine.

I am a firm believer in clean kills. Any "hunters" who intentionally subjects an animal to a slow, agonizing, death are douches who give the anti-hunting crowd more ammunition.

They’re an edible invasive animal, not game. I hate the idea of wasting game but hogs on the other hand, I’ll shoot every one I see and rarely retrieve them.

We were taught to retrieve and respect animals we hunt. I do not hunt hogs. I am engaged in all out battle against them. We trap, run over, shoot, snare, and any other thing we can think of to decrease the number of hogs on our property.

I did some soul searching on this very topic and came to the conclusion that those before us that taught us to be stewards of wild game never faced the dilemma that we face today. These bastards are worse than Nazis.

If the indiscriminate slaughter of wild hogs is wrong then I will never be right.

If there was a poison that would not effect turkey and deer then I would put it out.

Don't know about LA, but wild hogs are pretty much the only animal that the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says you can shoot and leave where it lands.

But do you have to shoot the biggest one if you're not going to eat it? Why not shoot a smaller, edible hog instead? That's more of my question.

Same in Louisiana. Clean shot, but if it's a boar that dropped his nuts, other animals need to eat. Them cocksuckers just about wiped out the deer on my place

I was taught at an early age that if you killed it, you ate it. Personally, I'd not waste anything I killed, and even if I didn't take it for myself, I'd process it and give it to someone who would use it.

There's lots of homeless shelters, charitable organizations, etc. that would probably love to have a few hogs to cook for the people they are trying to feed on a daily basis.

Because shooting the big one helps in the effort to rid them from your property. The gut shot and letting them die slowly is pretty shitty though

You have to kill 80% of the pigs off the land to keep their numbers from increasing EVERY YEAR. If you want the meat, keep the meat, but any dead hog is better than a live one.

I agree. If you don't want them there are plenty of people that would love to have them. I have a couple of guys that we bring 5-10 each year. There is no way we should be shooting animals and letting them just run off and die.

This is also a more ethical option than wasting an animal.

Yes, they were at one time around here. They don't take them anymore. Don't know as to why.

I'll take an educated guess and say "litigation" as in we've become such a litigious society that you need to be certified, insured, have an impeccable reputation to donate some game to organizations for them to use.

Just a hunch, but probably more accurate than I care to think.
