Where we live a bayou runs through our neighborhood and we have banked fished, but I don't know what the hell I'm doing. (I grew up in Philly). What's plinking? I wouldn't mind wandering a WMA. I don't own a gun and haven't shot one since I got out the Army. I'm not a liberal or anything, or against guns I just never got around to buying one.

You need to make a friend with a guy//kid your ages and get after it. If its slow you have an adult to talk to and the kid has someone to play with.

I recommend taking the saw blade off a telescoping pole saw and using that to pick up nets.

A cheaper option that we used to use is the telescoping pool skimmers. Can pick one up for $20 at home depot. You can rig up a hook to the end of it to make sure the net doesn't slide off.

This is what I use. Rigged up a hook on the end to keep the nets on the pole.
You can do well in Sherburne but a 4 wheeler is definitely ideal. It’s a long walk if you don’t have one.
Little tip to make life easier- shower curtain hangers work well to keep the beef melt attached to the nets. Way easier than trying to tie every piece on.
There’s a lot of snakes in Sherburne when it heats but do not bring a gun to shoot them. Bring a machete. Guns are illegal in the wma after hunting season.

I'm just curious...why would you choose crawfishing as the first outdoor activity you do with a five year old. I mean crawfishing can be fun, but it can also be a whole lot of work, travel, money, and generally a pain in the arse. What are you going to do if you happen to catch a mess of crawfish? You gonna clean them? Call a bunch of friends for a crawfish boil, spur of the moment type thing.

Get yourself a .22 and take the kid plinking or bank fishing somewhere or wandering around a wma.

If you have a boat, throw some jug lines out. There are numerous other outdoor activities that are much easier with a 5 yr old than crawfishing. But hey, if you are committed to going crawfishing, i say go for it. As long as you and your kid are enjoying the outdoors, that's all that counts.

Tons of outdoor activities can be a lot of work, travel and money. The key is to be interested in it and get out there and do it. Sounds like he has that going for him.

I would wait until the crabs run in the late summer, rather then fooling with crawfish.
You catch a bunch of small ones and you’ve got nothing worth eating. At least crabs are of sufficient size

Crawfishing at Sherburne is an entire day of outdoors.

Just my style.

You’ve got the set nets. Bait with melt. Use shower curtain rings to attach bait to bottom of net.

Long pole to pick up net. Anything works. Just don’t bump anything before you snatch the net.

Check in at the station and fill out the permit/tag.

Look at everything the permit allows you to harvest and if the crawfish aren’t running, havrest something else like dewberries.

We pay for Sherburne. Enjoy it!

Don’t forget to sign out your tag!

Just about any road side canal/big ditch will work. I know folks do well on Airline headed out of B.R. All along the levee around the Atchafalaya will work also. Many years ago I used to catch some along old Hwy 51(low road off of I-55 between Ponchatoula and Laplace). There are also spots along that hwy he can fish. It's not a terribly busy road so it's pretty safe. When my older kids were younger, I'd take them there pretty frequently.

For me it was a great success with the younguns. It’s relatively cheap and if you go when it’s hot you are basically guaranteed to catch something, and the kids really enjoy picking up the traps themselves with a long pole. I wouldn’t bank on catching enough to boil with a big crowd, but it’s a great activity to get them outside and most 5 yr olds are entertained as hell by live crawfish.

I’ve gone without an ATV many times, and its a haul to get out there with a wagon but doable if you’re not totally out of shape. I found that a kayak cart and a pirogue loaded with your gear was a better option, because the rubber tires are easier on the gravel road in (which is ATV or walking only) and the pirogue is a huge help especially with youngsters who are going to have a tough time walking far in the water. You can always just put the traps on the edges of the ponds though if you don’t want to get in the water.

Also, I’ve never seen any alligators in the crawfish ponds but I’d take a look around when you get there with a small kid. There’s not normally enough veg for them to hide though so I don’t think it’s a serious risk but I do have a look around when we get there. Also fair warning there are moccasins out there on the levees on the regular. Again we’ve all grown up wandering around swamps in LA and it’s really rare for people to get bit but with a 5 yr old just keep an eye out and tell him to not mess with them.

Lastly, if you don’t know what you’re doing I would recommend either first going with someone who does OR making a solo trip first to make sure you know what you are doing when you get there with a 5 yr old. We all can make this stuff sound easy and it IS easy if you’ve done it a time or two. But there’s a lot of knowledge that can’t be passed on in an internet post and it sucks to be out in a swamp with a young kid and your own head up your arse because you’re doing something you’ve never done before. Do that on your own if you can possibly avoid it. Or take the easy path and find someone who does know to go with you the first time. Good luck and for what it’s worth, thanks for taking a kid out to go hunting and fishing.

So I'm a Yankee that has been living here for a good while now and I have a 5 year old. I've come to the conclusion that I need to get him doing outdoor stuff. I've been lurking here for a while now and I've come to the conclusion that I need a crash course in hunting, fishing, and just about everything yall do.

Awesome that you are wanting to get into hunting/fishing, but even better that you are going to do it with your boy. I can't wait for my 2 year old to join me. I would suggest asking the old timer at church (if he is still physically able) to take you and show you what to do, or maybe someone else you know who does it. Most people I hunt/fish with would love to help someone and their little boy get started in the outdoors

I live in Ascension also. Don’t Bother trying to find somewhere in Ascension to crawfish. I’ve tried just about every spot.

Best bet is Sherburne south farm. Doesn’t open till mid -March. Should be great this year because it was closed last year due to high water. You don’t need a 4 wheeler, but you definitely need a garden wagon with blow up tires.

BC spillway is hit and miss. When the water drops on the river side where there is visible land. All you have to do is find a drainage ditch and you can load up very quickly. Mostly all white river crawfish, which are larger than swamp crawfish.

Beef melt is a must. Rouses can special order if they don’t have it in stock. Brian’s Superette also stocks it.

there is an app available for both android and iphone that you can use to avoid the paper check in/out process at the entrances

you can even check in the day before

I have a duck pond I catch crawfish in during April/May with a few traps I set and then run.

Also, have a pond with some bream.

It’s about 2.5 hr from Baton Rouge but if you want to bring your son for a day outdoors, I’ll be happy to oblige.

We do have lots of snakes here.

If you get hurt and sue me, I practice the three S method of court resolutions.

They have telescoping poles at Walmart for less than 10 dollars. I think they are in the area for RV cleaning
