UT Wildlife officials say 60 waterfowl found dumped in South Salt Lake dumpster

The 59 ducks and one Western grebe were discovered in a dumpster in an industrial part of South Salt Lake and reported to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said DWR conservation officer Josef Lehr on Thursday. There was no attempt to salvage meat from the birds.
Officials said they were able to identify an individual involved in the case. After a short investigation, they determined the birds were harvested in Idaho before they were brought to and dumped in Utah, with multiple individuals involved.

If this happened in Louisiana the only thing illegal would be the shooting of the grebe
Our wanton waste laws only state that an attempt to retrieve game must be made
After it’s retrieved, it’s yours to do what you want...throw it in the woods, feed it to the dog

Louisiana needs to do better with that. Not a good look.
Was this an outfitter dumping ducks? About half of the duck hunters I know down here don't really care to eat ducks. I'm usually given as many as I want every year.

Duck is delicious. I'll take any free ones. Lol
I was taught at an early age not to kill anything unless you are going to eat it. Off course animals attacking your chickens, threatening you, damaging your house that does not apply.
It seems morally wrong to me to kill a bunch of ducks and let the meat go to waste.
So our Louisiana laws basically say buy licenses, gear, guide fees, ammo, spend $$$. But the actual waterfowl we don't care about?

Same. We've never had a problem finding people to take some ducks off our hands when we need to.

Now that I'm thinking about it, aren't migratory waterfowl federally managed? Would that fall under some sort of federal wanton waste law if one exists?
I end up with a few deer shoulders/hindquarters every year from vendors/coworkers as well. I usually toss a couple roasts or bags of ground meat their way. Even if I didn't hunt I could make sure a good portion of what I eat was wild game just from me mooching off of folks who don't want to deal with their meat.

No. If you think about it, you can’t legislate it. What would you say? All game must be eaten or given away?

Being wasteful is very subjective. You can ride around Venice marina and find blue and green wing teal with just the breast meat fileted out floating down the canal. Pretty wasteful in my book.

Its tough. I'd love to see some sort of stipulation to process any game taken. But I didn't go to lawyer school and don't know how all of that works.

Wanton waste is more tied to limits. If duck hunters don’t retrieve birds they could keep hunting because of “possession limits”. There is no law that requires anyone to do anything with waterfowl once they leave the field.
You may find it morally reprehensible but wanton waste laws aren’t really to prevent waste of waterfowl. Now big game is a bit different and the intention is a bit different.
