Similar story. While my dad and step-mom were building a house they lived in an apartment. My step-mom was cleaning up and found a ruger 22 and a box of rubbers on top of the kitchen cabinets. We figured the yout that lived there before had hid them up there.
I got the pistol....
and the rubbers

A few years back I was turkey hutning and had the need to immediate release the morning's breakfast. Leaned my SBE II against a tree and relieved the impending gastric emergency. Spent two hours looking and couldn't find which tree I leaned my gun against. It took me three days of looking to find it. I now have my trigger guard painted neon orange to avoid future losses.

I had a 30-06 missing for over a year. Come to find out, my step brother in law showed up to hunt with it with me one morning. He still has it now.
I've also completely lost a .40 caliber pistol. It was kept in my armrest of my truck. The truck was never broken into, nothing else ever missing, no pistol. I kept a checkbook and a bank envelope with a $100 bill in there for incidentals of they ever came up. I find it hard to believe someone stole my gun and nothing else. It simply disappeared.

on a canoe trip as kids, my cousins lost their 22 and 20ga on our canoe camping trip. Less than a week after Christmas.

I've misplaced one.
Found it a few months later and it felt like Christmas.

Found it. The buddy I just knew I lent it to finally decided to look for after me texting him 4 times over a month.
