It’s definitely a process and painting was my favorite part.

Bait right off the lathe.

Here’s a pic after inserting bearings in the bait to produce sound.
Next pic is after airbrushing. I had a few screw ups, but paint is forgiving and I was able to paint over it and came out ok. Airbrushing is something I’ll have to practice a lot.

Here’s a pic after first coat of epoxy. I built a stand that turns the baits with a small motor so the epoxy flows evenly on the baits. It really makes the colors pop out.

Now I wait overnight for 2nd and last coat tomorrow and then add hooks and to test them out! Tight lines!

That'll probably buy that wooden pickle in the first pic.

I know right. I’m putting owner hooks, Wolverine split rings on these. Those have three rings instead of two. Screw will come out before that ring gives.

Tell me about the weights. Looks like that one one the pic is in the front of the bait, but can’t tell.

Have you given thought to try an make a channel in the body of one and put a sliding weight in the channel?

Regardless, they look great.

Bbvdd, the baits themselves floated fine without any weights. I drilled holes on different areas of the bait to see which one would produce the best sound once I added the beads. Some I inserted metal bearings housed in glass that sound great. Others used glass beads which weigh less and added aluminum from a soda can on the ends for the glass to hit against. Makes sound, just a different sound. We shall see what works better on the water. I also drilled all the way through and sealed with wood filler on each side. The sound travelled better then if I just drilled from one side.

Best small motor I found that works are ones that come out of ice makers. Cost around $20.

Choupique, I could actually do that one. Let me test a few more woods out first. Took the basswood baits and worked them in the pool and the action on them was good, but the beads weren't as loud as I was hoping.
