I think it's just part of the gator culture in Florida. I spent hundreds of hours in water where gators were in Louisiana and never had a bad interaction with one.

If you see a dead alligator on the side of a road, don't stop and examine it. They close their eyes and take in sun for warmth. I was 5 feet away when he gave a low pitch growl without opening his mouth or eyes. I backed away slowly.

eta: The best way to fend off an attacking gator isn't an elbow drop but sticking your thumb up its butthole.
