I haven’t heard a single good reason to allow internationally owned entities to commercial fish U.S. waters. Why was this allowed to begin in the first place?

Because there is not one!

Chris Macaluso wrote a report yesterday from LWF Commission meeting regarding bycatch study. Shows pogey boats kill approx 30,000 redfish per year plus approx. 81 million croaker.

Yep, they have been on many of our reefs in the lake. Worse than F’ing Flipper. Once a pon a time the Pogie fleet fished 100 miles offshore (1984). Now they’re right off the beaches, I believe our shark problems are directly correlated to a limited supply of pogies offshore.

I think it was July 2020 when they were off holly beach killing reds. I shut it down coming in and took pics of multiple bull reds floating. Their net boats would run between ours and the rocks off the beach Same year they left that net with tons of Pogie in it to rot. I think the state fined them $5k.

Take the reported numbers and multiple them by at least 10. They are worst than the gill netters abs number one obstacle to great fishing in Louisiana and Mississippi and to some extent Alabama and Eastern Texas. It’s fricking obscene for the “sportsman’s paradise”

Greenjeans told me last summer when he was at Bridge Side that Corey Booker slipped us the weenie on sharks a few years ago. Slipped it into an unrelated bill that they have to be kept whole until reaching their ultimate market. Head, guts, and all. If you’ve ever fooled with sharks, if you don’t clean them quickly and properly, the ammonia will asphyxiate you when you do. So, the commercials quit fishing them.

Take it FWIW, you know sharks are a big deal to Temu Obama’s constituents.

The shark story is way more complicated than that, and that bill was in reaction to the Japanese Shark fishing disaster of the 80s -90s when they parked their industrial fishing fleet right off our coast and nearly wiped out the sharks for shark fin soup. They had huge fleets with massive freezer and processing ships. They just kept the fin and threw the shark carcass overboard and each fleet could catch 10,000 or more sharks a day plus easily on their massive 1 to 5 mile long lines.

This is why you have EZ zones and our federal waterways jurisdiction goes out past 7 or 11 miles. It was to stop the Japanese from wiping out all our fish like they have everywhere else.

There really never was that much of an American Shark fishery. But if we let the Japanese in with on board monitors they could get shark population in control in one year or less.

That’s great information. I knew about the finning practice, but you wrapped a lot of detail around what little I knew. So. How do we turn them loose? And why can’t the cat ladies feed shark instead of salmon??
