Long story short, was moving 3 hunting rifles between my place and my girlfriends place to hunt over the course of the weekend. We made a pit stop at a strip mall for a few minutes and one of the natives busted my back window and stole all 3 rifles, mine, my girlfriend's and my kids.

All were in soft cases and on the floorboard in the back seat, it was at night, but in a well light and populated area on the side of a busy thoroughfare. I don't know what else I was supposed to do besides not leave my truck unattended. Was only out of the truck 15-20 minutes max.

The real moral of the story is I can't find serial numbers on 2 of the guns. They were older rifles that were bought 2nd hand. I can't find the serial numbers written down anywhere. Make sure you have a running list of serial numbers for all of your weapons and major electronics that is in a safe place and easy to get to in case of theft or fire. Police said they may not be able to do much if I can't give them a serial number. They can't detain someone or give the guns back just on description alone. So I'm working on my list now and going to have them on a spreadsheet and updated occasionally. Might even print it out and keep a copy in my glove compartment and at work. I hate a thief.

The only gun that's not replaceable is my son's old family heirloom 30-30. No telling how many people have killed their first deer with that gun, including me.

I've got plenty of pictures, but serial numbers are only definitive way to determine ownership of a weapon.

Apparently not this one. A witness saw the guy bypass the redlight camera coming out of the shopping center and drive through the gas station next door, so hoping for a license plate pic from the gas station.

The method I use is to take pics of gun and serial numbers with my camera and then put the SD card in the safe. Every time I buy a new gun just pop the card in the cam, take 3 pics (both sides and serial number), and then put the card back. It works for me

They probably do. My windows were busted out at a car dealership and they told me the same thing. Had to get the police involved

Something real similar happened to me in Memphis several years ago at my gf’s house. Took my Yukon with all my hunting stuff, two rifles, etc.

Got a phone call a few years later saying that my .35 Whelan had been recovered.

A dude from Tipton Co. had bought it at a gun show in Desoto Country.

And he killed himself with it. Otherwise, it would’ve never turned up.

There’s still an A-Bolt 300 wsm floating around out there somewhere.

Don't think I'd want that rifle back? Sounds cursed to me.

I record all of my serial numbers and store them in Google drive in a spreadsheet. That way I can't misplace it or have the SD card fail on me.

I did not keep it.

OP, make sure you stay on your investigating officer. The troubled youths that took mine could've been caught or at least ID'd had the officer assigned to my case been somewhat competent. They had also taken an old checkbook of mine from an inactive account and bought some stuff at Target. Target sent me a letter for the bad check that was written. Well, they keep their tape for 30 days. I told my officer to check the tapes at Target, but he waited too long and they had erased them already. Missed it by one day.

Weird how things like that happen.

That’s too bad. So did you get it back?

A 15 year old just shot and killed an elderly lady last night on Morel street. Might want to look into that and see if they recovered the weapon.

16623 Morel Ave - the address of the killing

Any gun purchase gets recorded in a document with the make/model, serial number, place and date of purchase, etc.

I email a copy to myself when it is updated. I have access to it from anywhere, and even if my PC is stolen or destroyed.
