I’ve never towed anything beyond my fathers light boat. My wife is now talking about renting a camper, and i don’t know if I’m equipped for it.

I have a 2016 Tundra which is rated i think at 9800 lbs towing. It’s stock. This camper has a dry weight of 8700lbs and is 37 ft long. I feel like that’s a bit much for this truck. The ad says I’ll need an electric brake controller which tbh I know nothing about.

We wouldn’t be going on any mountain roads but maybe some hills. Should I rent a bigger truck to tow this thing? The weight limit is cutting it close.

This can work out for you. Turn this in to a new 3/4 ton purchase. Truck nuts!! Problem solved.

37 ft is too big to haul with a half ton. That's a big arse sail that will snatch you all over the road. The weight isnt a problem (with trailer brakes) but the size definitely is.

Rent a smaller camper or get a bigger truck

Go to Enterprise Truck rentals and get a 3/4 Ton truck rental (they have F-250 and Ram diesels). You have to tell them you will be towing as most regular truck rentals dont allow it. I rented an F-250 to drive to Hot springs, AK a few years back.

How much is a 3/4 ton truck for a week? I’d think it would be expensive with the mileage. Seems like you’d be better off staying in a cabin.

37ft is huge OP. How big is your family? You don’t want to just try a smaller one?

Wife and three kids, but my oldest child is confined to a wheelchair so we need the room and accessibility.

Thanks for all the advice. I was leaning towards renting a 3/4 or 1 ton and this thread confirmed it.

Don't freak out when it starts swaying everywhere going down the interstate

Man, a 37 foot camper is one hell of a rig...I can't say I would be comfortable pulling that. Have you considered renting a motor home?

Stepping up from a light fishing boat to a 37' should be interesting

Good. A dually will be much much more stable and safer

good decision, otherwise you were likely going to have one b-hole puckering ride.

The one ton is also going to allow you far more leeway on tongue weight which is pretty important.

Good choice! I pull a 36ft with a 3/4 ton and would not recommend anything less. Blows my mind how they sell these as 'half ton towable'
