So is the consensus to go with masonry sand for filling in low spots and leveling? I would need probably 6" in some areas -- that's gonna set me back quite a bit.

sand is for filling holes and smoothing...if you need to fill 6 inches you should be looking at fill dirt

Gotcha. So what do I ask for when I call around? "Fill dirt" could mean any type of dirt, right? I'm sure I'm not looking for topsoil as that would wash away easily. No?

something with some clay in it...different places call it different things. generally its a mixture of sand, organics and clay

just tell em what you want to do with it, and find out how they will deliver it. cheapest way is they will just dump it, but then you'll need to pick it up and spread it. some places will tailgate spread it for you, if your yard is dry enough

What if I were to aerate my yard that I wanted to level out in certain spots. Would I level out before or after aerating or would I aerate around the sand spots?

Torpedo grass has broken my spirit. I have given up on my back yard and I am trying to keep out of front. It is the devil,

Aerate, topdress with sand, then drag to help fill in
