Tire Rotation Protocol

I always went front to back every oil change. Tire shop told me to put backs up front and cross the fronts to the back. That’s what I did. It’s a whole lot more work than just jacking up one side. Is this the new SOP?

Pretty standard to swap sides on the fronts

I thought it had always been that way.

Dang. Guess I learned from old old school guys. I even asked the best home mechanic I know and he scoffed at it.

The real answer is "it depends"
I have had staggered, directional tires that could not be rotated but they wore evenly because the car was maintained with proper alignment for it's use.
If your tires are wearing evenly going straight front to back isn't a big deal at all. If they aren't... you probably could use an alignment more than swapping sides.
I do find that front wheel drive cars tend to be harder on the front tires so maybe it would be worth the effort to swap sides? I haven't had a FWD car in a decade though...

Back to front. Front to back, opposite side.

Steering tires will still wear different from back tires even if the alignment is correct. Small things like driving the same way to work everyday will even cause tires to wear differently. You can still stagger directional tires you just have to remove them from the rim.

I don’t rotate my tires on my 2017 Silverado. It seems like the front tires are the only ones that wear out. When the fronts are worn I get two new tires and they always put them on the back. Original tires lasted 30,000. New Michelin‘s from Costco have 50,000 miles on them and they still look good.

Yep. I went more than 90K miles without a tire rotation on the last set. No need.

I just rotated both wife and my trucks today. Guess I gotta get some jack stands. 1 cypress beam and cinder block was a PIA moving around.

Pretty good advice above, but more importantly is to rotate on a regular basis, which for me is 6,000 miles…

If your vehicle has the gauges that reads the tire pressures, each tire must be reprogramed when you move the tire to a different location.
You can do this yourself, but you have to get the instrument [I don't remember what it is called]. I think it cost about $40.

5 tire rotation if you have a full size spare

Same here with a 2010 Z71.

This is correct and not new......if it seems new to you, then you need to rotate your tires more often

When I change wheels I just stack the tires up. When I change back if they are directional I try to get that right but don't worry about what corner it goes on.

Depending on which tires you run, some CANNOT be spun at high speeds at a direction opposite of what they've been spinning.
I've run some ATs and MTs and if you made that mistake you would have belt issues within a few hundred miles.
