here is a pic of the actual boat

McKee made some great boats. I fished on that exact model a number of times growing up and always enjoyed it. Simple but tough and will last forever.

There's actually a cult like following for McKee's across the nation.

We do it just fine in our 18 ft Carolina skiff

Bull Shite. You do it and get soaking wet.

I have no problem with Carolina Skiffs, but don't say you handle 3-4 ft seas "fine" in one.

Wanna bet? It ain't a smooth ride by no means, but we do just fine. Would we prefer a better boat? Yeah but we have to make do with what we got.

Last time a buddy went out, he was about 45 miles out in 3 footer in his 29' boat and ran across a guy in a 20' Panga just cruising like it was nothing.

Yep, Panga is the real deal. I don't care what it looks like, you can't knock it as far as versatility. Nothing compares.

I understand that, and I have no issue with a Carolina Skiff, like I said. But your definition of "fine" appears to be "we lived". 2-3 footers in an 18' CS will beat the hell out of you, and you'll be soaking wet in about 20 seconds. That ain't "fine" to me.

Fair enough.

Believe it or not we didn't really get too wet, granted we can't really run with the hammer down on the way out, but we do just fine. Now when we went in 5-6 footers, frick that never again.

JAB, research Panga. Like the other poster, I don't own one...not trying to sell em. But those boats would be perfect for just exactly what he described, better than any other hull. Literally like an offshore flats boat lol.

I will. We're trying to get a boat made for offshore, since we're doing it more and more and the Carolina skiff just ain't cuttin it.

A friend in Cali says he finds Panga's sitting on the beach every so often. The messicans use them to drive up offshore at night from Tijuana. They are home built and look like crap with new looking engines.

I don't know how you wouldn't stuff the bow and swamp a Carolina Skiff in anything over a 2ft chop. Those things don't have much freeboard to begin with. I wouldn't take my 17' boston whaler in a 2-3' chop much less a carolina skiff.

Choosing to go out in 5-6 foot seas in an 18 ft Carolina (I have no way of breaking waves with my bathtub like design) Skiff. I hate to be a jerk, but I call BS. Either you went out in what you thought was 5-6 ft seas because you were in an 18 ft boat and it felt that way, or you're just BS'ing. 5-6 ft seas aren't fun in a Viking, a Yellowfin, a World Cat or a Freeman which are all boats built to handle way more than a Carolina Skiff and a Panga.

When talking about seas, when it's calm and kicks up to to 5-6 ft seas from a storm and boats get caught offshore that only make it offshore on calm days. You hear of boats capsizing, not to mention I don't think any 18 ft boat handles 3-4's with ease much less willingly goes out in them. I've fished out the gulf for 20+ years and when it's truly 3-4's there are no 18 ft boats to be found offshore.
