Thinking about buying a used truck. I have never owned a ram, but the ones I have seen at dealership look and drive great. What are the thoughts on reliability issues with the 13-17 1500 hemis?

The only real issue I have seen searching online is exhaust manifold bolts breaking. Can’t really get a feel for how common this issue is though.

I have a 17 Laramie c/c 4x4 with the hemi and 3.92 gears. I love the truck. Pulls like a mule. 40k miles on mine so far zero issues. Oil change and filters. Was thinking about getting a new one b/c I can get free money with the 0%. Mine is dam near paid off. I don't know what the hell to do. Ha ha

That’s exactly right. I have a 2014 with 100k miles, and the exhaust manifold bolts had to be replaced under warranty. Other than that, it has been an excellent truck. Rides great with the rear coil springs, and pulls even better. I would say that the exhaust manifold thing is really just an inconvenience, as it won’t cause any issues other than noise at startup.

Go to ramforum.com you can learn all the issues people have, lifting, tires, wheels, deleting, pretty much any mod or problem they have or otherwise.

I have a 2014 with 113k. I haven't even had to change the brake pads yet. I keep the oil and air filter changed/clean, changed the belt once (just because) and changed the plugs at 100k (also just because).

The only thing that went out on it was the radio...I did have to replace that.

I would approve. I would get one after they updated the transmission, you can tell if it was updated because that is when they went to the dial shift controls.

Had a 2013 with a little over 100k. Dealership performed all work since truck was purchased new. One day started missing a little and check engine light came on. Being a diy guy, I took it to the parts store to run the code. Came back as cylinder misfire. Changed that cylinder coil and all the plugs while I was at it. Still missing.

Took it to a mechanic to look into it thinking maybe the computer needed to be reset. A day later he tells me the camshaft is bad and needs a new motor. I thought BS. Took it to the dealership. Couple days later they told me the same thing. Cam was worn not allowing the intake valve to come fully open. Warranty just expired. And salsbury said it was nothing they can do that I just had that 1/1000 bad motor.

Not saying they are a bad truck because of that. I still have an older dodge with the 4.7 v8 and love it. But I personally would not own another. Wanted to share my experience with the hemi.

That's odd as everything has roller lifters now, its hard to wear a lobe down, but I guess its possible. I would just change the cam and lifters before I would replace the whole engine, not too bad of a job to do. Probably under a grand in parts, gaskets etc.

I’ve been to ramforums but it’s hard to figure out how common the issues are since most of the people who have problems flock there. Like it makes issues seem more common than they are.

Anyone with the air ride suspension? Wondering about reliability of that as well

95K on my 2014 1500 (I it bought new), but not a single issue so far, has been a great truck I plan on driving until the wheels fall off.

The Uconnect 8.4 on my 2020 is buggy, but otherwise a very nice truck. I am a little worried about A/C effectiveness this coming summer, so may do the valve mod.

The terminology is over my head, but it's something about hot fluid from heater core mixing in with A/C fluid? You install a valve in line and shut it off in summer. Open in winter or your heater won't work. I'll link the 5th gen thread when I get to work.

We run the crap out of them at work typically carrying 5-600 lbs in the back with little to no issues.

This is a rather common issue with the Rams, there is a know problem with improperly heat-treated cams that suffer from accelerated wear to the point of engine failure. Misfire issues is one of the symptoms. I would scope the valve covers on any used Ram regardless of mileage and service history, any glitter from cam wear would show in the oil.

I put 150k on my 2014 big horn. Only 2 issues I ever had was an exhaust leak, and the third brake light leaking (which is a very common problem). Other than those two items, she was a great truck.

I have a 2109 limited and was worried about the AC some guys were complaining about. Mine gets too cold even in August heat with the sun out. Hemi is a great engine. You can talk yourself out of any truck if you look hard enough. The ram is a great truck.
