Thoughts on Mecury Verado 350 and Evinrude G2 motors

Anyone have real practical experience with either the new Verado motors or Evinrude G2 motors? I am looking to buy a new boat and want to know real experience with either of these two brands please.

I have nothing to offer except that G2 looks bad arse!

Several boats have come through the shop with verado 350's on them this spring and every owner loves it

The Verado was released in 2004 and has proven itself to be one of the most reliable outboard engines available. We literally have hundreds come through our shop each year. They are by far the most numerous, but are the least repaired engines that we see. Generally, they're here for required maintenance or other work not pertaining to the engine. They had their issues in the beginning, but Mercury seems to have ironed out the kinks with updated and upgraded parts. The same can't be said for other manufacturers.
They really hit a home run with the refinements made to the new 350 and 400. I've seen repowers from Verado 300s achieve 20 percent better fuel economy. A lot of boat manufacturers don't rig Verados correctly and that can cause headaches for consumers. As with all digital engines, they're extremely voltage sensitive and require specific electrical system setups to provide trouble free service.
Any outboard engine built these days, regardless of manufacturer, are only as good as your servicing dealer. If you don't have access to an experienced and certified dealer, you will have a horrible experience when the time for service comes. No matter what, if you keep it long enough, you will require dealer service one day. Good luck with your decision and let me know if you need any more information.

if you intend to use this boat in salt water you better make damn sure you have a sea tow membership if you purchase a mercury or evinrude

Last year when the FLW was in town, I took a test drive with David Fritts in a 21' Ranger with a 250 HO G2. Damn thing had so much torque you could take off from a dead stop with the motor trimmed halfway up and it would just jump on plane. And that was with a 26p prop to boot. I think Evinrude is still offering the 8 year warranty so that's also something to consider. The biggest thing though for me would be is there a trustworthy dealer close by for service. I have a 2003 225 HO and have to drive 100 miles to get it worked on because the only local Evinrude dealer is a crook and is full of shite.

I think since you are buying new it really won't matter because you will have the warranty.
I don't care who makes it, they all develop problems after about 4 years unless it stays parked about 28 days out of the month

I have a 2017 350 verado with just over 50 hours on it now. Engine has been great. Smooth, powerful and good economy considering the HP.

This would make my decision for me. I have a Mercury Optimax but considering a switch to Suzuki because of the local dealers.
I'm still too gun shy w Evinrude's.....seen too many break down (I used to own one too), plus nobody around here services them.
As with any new model engine, I would wait to purchase after they've been out a couple of years. Like said above, the Verado had its issues early on before they got the kinks out. The G2 hasn't been out long enough to verify if its good or not. So out of the 2 you want, I'd go Verado 350 all day everyday.

what good is an 8 year warranty if motor stays in the shop all the time and you aren't able to use your boat? Not paying mechanic costs but loss of use is a factor to consider. Have heard this scenario from several G2 owners.

There's a evinrude video on Facebook racing 2 identical boats to some island off Florida. They were pimping the fact that the evinrude had better gas mileage and made it faster than the yammy.
Every single comment was from evinrude owners saying how shitty they actually are
Not to mention the added cost of the 2-stroke oil negates any cost benefit of the better gas mileage
Edit - found the link

Father in law has the Verado 400R and loves it. I don't know anything about the G2 but it does look bad arse.

I agree but what do the oil change cost for the Yamaha's? You would have to factor that in also. Don't forget about the once a year or 100 hour timing belt replacement.
