THEY MIGHT HURT US OR OUR SHEEP! KILL THEM ALL!

Have you ever looked into moving to England? They've killed all their "dangerous" stuff. You'd be safe there.

canebrakes are remarkably docile. even messing with them, i've never induced one to coil or strike.

Yeah, this one never moved except very slightly when I moved a branch from over its head that was making a shadow and fricking up my photos.

I know.

I just happen to be reading a book that mentions this very topic. It is a European mentality. Kill everything.

If there's a dangerous snake in someone's yard, and they kill it, I get that. Personally, I'd probably try to relocate it, because I think they're very cool, but that's just me. But, why kill every snake or even every venomous snake you see in the wild? Do you know that many people that have died of snake bite, or cougar attack? They belong there. That's part of the beauty of nature in my opinion. Just give them some respect and watch where you step. Don't let your young kids run around unattended in places they're likely to be. And all is good.

Kill things to eat, not out of fear. Your chances of ever dying of snake bite are miniscule.

...and the chances that the killing of any snake is preventing something bad is even lower.

I hate it too, that's why if I ever see it I throw it away immediately to prevent my dog, GF or child from eating it accidentally

All I know for sure about that particular snake is that, judging from the pics, you got ALOT closer to it then I would have.

it took years, but I finally convinced my mother in law to stop chopping up every snake she saw with a hoe. King snakes, mud snakes, milk snakes, rat snakes, racers...never a single poisonous snake. I guess it may have been the rat snake i caught eating rats in the trailer behind her house, and the fact she has mice and rats coming from the fields around her house, inside.

However, out in the country the "kill every snake you see" attitude is prevalent. Not very bright, IMHO, but you aren't going to fix someone who has been indoctrinated with that since childhood.
