Yep and they pull much tighter than nails with no chance of busting the ribs loose on the underside.
Honestly, I would like to do one where the finished version has no nails or screws in it. Just held together with glue.

And with screws I would eliminate the hammer marks that would surely be there!!

You could not remove those nails. There were a couple of screw ups and a variety of techniques were used to fix the problems. They included tapping the nail from the back with a nail punch and grabbing with nippers and drilling the nail heads out...

Just thinking about a cleaner look. Drive the screw a little deeper and then putty over it to hide it.
Perhaps the nails do not show once it us finished.
Can't wait to see one painted up!

While I was hammering i was thinking about the self tapping deck screws, never asked Fish so not sure of the plus and minus of using them?

would be nice...and using a 14-16 ft. sheet of plywood...
you would need 3 times as many clamps to do the rub rails...
to do the the bottom without nails or filling in screw holes, you would need twice the amount of the clamps used on the sides...very large bar clamps... tooling up for that kind of build would be expensive.

Tools for the advanced build. You get dropped off in the woods...

The nails were used mostly for attaching 1/4" plywood. This is made of three layers of veneer which provides strength. Any time a layer is compromised you greatly reduce the strength of the plywood at that spot. Counter sinking screws would go through the outer two layers at a minimum. Leaving only one thin layer of veneer to hold the plywood in place by the screw.
If you were to use screws you would need to put a fender washer on each to prevent it from counter sinking and then after the glue had set remove all the screws and fill the holes with putty.
You might be able to use screws with steel and neoprene washers designed for putting on tin roofs but they have shallower threads designed for sheetmetal not wood. The advantage would be the washers come already on the screws and tend to stay on the screws and they are hex head drive so less slipping as compared to the Phillips head screws.

Pepp For the bottom you should be able to use weights to hold the bottom down without clamps.
For the sides you would need lots of clamps though. At least 1 every 6" of boat length and you would need to let it sit for dry time before removing.
Wick I have been racking my brain how to build one with out the advantages of plywood.

Fish said he was going to try and build one out of cypress soon...
I was thinkinkg 1/4" thick boards, 2" wide with some sort of way to glue between joints similar to a T&G but something that would work on thin boards...

Evening gents.
I want to thank all of you for the planer. Y'all shouldn't have done that. Once I met y'all, I knew I was in good company.
I will put it to use and hope soon.

3/4" sheetrock screws and 1"x1/4" hole flat washers. Once everything is cured, you just drive in a golf tee with a little glue, cut it off flush. This takes a lot of time due to having to let the glue cure. You still have to use screws at the joints, ribs and rub rails.

I would love to build two 5 foot pirogues for crawfish boils. One to hold drinks and another to hold the crawfish.

That's gonna save you some time now, huh Fish?
As soon as we saw how much time it saved I think the light bulb clicked in each of our heads at the same time. We knew we had to get you one and know you'll appreciate it...
Thanks to the OB'er who orchestrated getting it ordered and shipped. I won't name him unless he wants to come forward. Just know, we were all glad to pitch in and get it for you, Fish!

Amazon ratted me out to Fish on the invoice... I got a call from him before I got the text notification of delivery. I asked why he called me, I thought I was in the clear and anonymous, apparently not...

Hahahahaha! Damn you Amazon! Damn you!

Agreed very glad we could do something very small that would be a token of appreciation for you being so generous to all of us this past weekend.
