I have always hunted with an O/U since I was a kid. Never really used anything else. Recently inherited a 12 gauge Remington 1100 that I would love to shoot ducks with but it doesn't have a plug.

Here's my question - and I feel dumb as hell about it but the manuals online i found arent clear about it. Are plugs generic? Can I use any plug or do I really need to look for one specifically made for this gun?

TIA

Remington's are universal. Buy one online for $5 or make your own out of a wooden dowel rod for .50 cents

Normally I just get a stick, cut until I can only put 2 3" shells in the tube.

easy peasy .... DIY plastic plug - coat hanger

disregard my suggestion of a dowel rod - wood will hold moisture when wet and possibly cause metal internal components to rust. Go with a plastic coat hanger. Length should be approx. 5 1/2" - chances are you can do this project for FREE

I prefer a pencil cut to length.

The catch in Georgia is the plug must require the firearm to be disassembled to remove the "plug", so if it is just a stick/dowel/etc that can just fall out by shaking the gun, it doesn't count and is still illegal.

Removing the forend nut doesn't constitute disassembly?

It does, I was speaking to plugs where people just put them in through the feeding hole and can shake them out.

I have always used a pencil. That’s going back a long time, though. Maybe something new, now.

My wife’s Mossberg Turkey Thug has a small diameter dowel with a rubber o-ring that is the same diameter as the barrel. Simple to make.
