What about the drive?
It is a lot smoother than expected. I had to use a little more effort when heading into an incoming tide and the wind obviously but nothing back breaking. I do wish it had a prop orientation indicator. Twice my dumbass forgot to orient the prop correctly to completely raise out the hull and beached it once and ramp-ed it a second time. But that's more on me and my inattention than the drive. So far so pleased. Quality Yak and drive.

Kind of a dumb question but I just thought about it. This could go in the fly fishing thread too. Does anyone know if fly rods float? If not, what's the best way to keep mine from going to the bottom of the lake like my gun collection?

I use these from Yak Gear. I don't fly fish so can't say for sure if they'll fit a fly rod, but they work fine on spinning and baitcasting rods I have

I've been kayaking for years and never dropped a rod in the water. Yet everyone I see has them on their rods so I did the same just to fit in
Better safe than sorry I guess

Never know when you might get hit by a water spout in Grand Isle and get flipped
I've only had 1 go in the water...but I hadn't been kayak fishing long by that time and it was really just a noob mistake. Didn't quite have enough of the rod butt in the rod holder and when I let go, it fell in the water. Was able to use another rod to drag a big hook across the bottom and eventually snag it and get it back. Got the floats after that.

Good friend who lives in San Diego and has spent more time in a kayak than anyone I know recently flipped in his Predator PDL and lost probably close to $2500 worth of stuff between his offshore combos, his tackle/gear, and his new iphone. If it can happen to that guy, it can happen to anyone. If you fish in shallow water, the risk is much lower and even if you do flip you can likely recover most of your stuff.

I've been kayak fishing since 2006 and had never flipped until last summer (literally days after making a comment about having never flipped). I was fishing at night and have no idea what flipped me. There was a huge school of big reds crashing all over and next thing I know I went over while sitting still. Somehow my rods stayed in the rocket launchers and only lost a hat and Net. Found out that the inflatable life jackets work great though.

I dropped a rod and found it after a few minutes. Never flipped, but came close once at Cocodrie when a large boat passed.

I’ve been looking at the Yak Gear rod floats. Do they cause any issue with hitting/touching the line on a spinning reel? I saw some reviews that said they do, but from the pics I’ve seen it shouldn’t be an issue.

Not really. I’ve had it happen once in a while but 97% of my casts its not an issue.

The new Pelican Catch 130 HD -12’6 -85lbs (I assume w/out drive) -1,499 msrp -due out Jan 2019 This is a screen shot from a YouTube video so I enhanced it so the words might be more readable. It’s said to be the old generation mirage drive which is pretty bullet proof. I actually really like the layout with big front and rear tankwells. I’ll definitively look at one up close for things like floor flex and whatnot. For under 1,500, a mirage drive, and that layout, that’s a hell of a rollout for Pelican.
Just saw online that they now have them in stock at Academy at siegen, if anyone wants to see them in person.

I lost 2 rod n reel combos when I first started kayak fishing. Flipped my old pescador reaching over too far trying to lip a fish. Lessons were learned that day. Tether everything!

You should get a Hobie PA. They have built in horizontal rod holders.
