The LA Duck Season dates are a joke...

DUCKS, COOTS AND MERGANSERS
COASTAL ZONE:
NOV. 2-3 (YOUTH ONLY)
NOV. 9-DEC. 8
DEC. 21-JAN. 19
WEST ZONE:
NOV. 9 (YOUTH ONLY)
NOV. 16 - DEC. 8
DEC. 21-JAN.26
FEB 1 (YOUTH ONLY)
EAST ZONE:
NOV. 16 (YOUTH ONLY)
NOV. 23-DEC. 8
DEC. 14-JAN. 26
FEB. 1 (YOUTH ONLY)
I like how they open the season earlier than Arkansas and Missouri even though LA is farther down the flyway...

Early hunting pressure in Arkansas and Missouri might push more birds down for early season in LA if they take down the nets...

Once people stop duck hunting and generating tax dollars I'm sure they will reconsider these dates in the future

Also of note, speck season is closed the first week of the second split in the East zone.
It's open the entirety of the duck season in the West and South.
How the frick does that work?

Not too good. I predict many out of season specks to fall that week

Need to start it December 20th and run nonstop till February 15th.
It never gets cold enough up north to get many ducks in December.
I usually get one good hunt opening morning shooting mostly local ducks that never migrate and then 2-3 good weeks in January.

I predict many tickets to be written by greenjeans on 15 and in Jones that week too.

Why did they move the opening weekend later in November? When I was growing up it was always the first weekend in November. And they split the youth hunt into separate dates in the west zone. LDWF hates kids. I would take 45 days straight if they opened it on the first weekend in November.

you would be in the minority there
may be ducks first weekend but they would be shot out quickly

Does the East zone always have only a 7 day split?
How the hell does it make sense to start the coastal zone before the non-coastal parishes?

It looks like these are still the "proposed" dates that came out in January. Didn't see anything on Google about them making it official, though I'm sure the season will be the same as the proposed dates.

I'm weird, but open it for Thanksgiving week and shut it down for a while. Then run it 50 or 53 days straight from end/mid December until Jan 31 or 30th. I hunt coastal and want it as late as possible.
Couldn't care less if it opens on a weekday. I actually liked when teal opened on a Friday a couple years back.

After the season we, and everyone, just had in La and Arky, I could not care a whole lot less about the structure of the season. The week more here and less there will not matter two flying fricks with a mild winter coupled with record rainfall on the Miss. River watershed as we saw for 2018 season.
I used to get worked up about it but either way it'll be fine for killing some birds. But you've got to have them here for all the monkeying with the dates to even matter.

The season has to end no later than January 31, so they can't move it much. Besides, like someone else said, a mild winter and a lot of rain doesn't help us. The birds need a reason to fly south. As long as there is food and water up north, birds aren't coming down.

Within the range of "fairly normal" for precip and temps, we will shoot birds. This past season was just a massive anomaly for rainfall.......hence the early opening of the spillway long before any discernible snow melt was occurring. Was reported to be the highest recorded rainfall on the entire Miss. River watershed. Great to be a duck, bad to be a hunter.
For those questioning our opening days that are earlier than AR and/or MO, you need to look further into the dynamics of the migration. It's simply NOT as simple as "Well we should open latest because birds have to pass through MO and AR before getting to us." The early arrivers, photo period migrators, are here early on the coast. I've seen masses of grays in October on many years. The early opening is taking advantage of those early arrivals.

At 10:30am when you have a $15,000 blind note, 5 teal, 3 spoons and a black jack those 4 specks hovering over the dekes are gonna be awfully tempting
