I was riding my bike today and in the distance I saw what I first thought was hundreds of buzzards circling. As I got closer I realized they were Mississippi Kites. They were over a freshly plowed field all dipping and catching stuff. There had to have been hundreds of them. I've never seen that many together before. Is this common?

I have seen them in big huge numbers in the fall in Ms. I assumed they were migrating. Maybe they are headed back now. I have only seen a 2-3 this year so far.

How do they taste? Maybe they can replace all the grey ducks that I used to have in my freezer.

I've got a pair nesting in the trees next door. I've seen a group of 25-30 doing what you describe but never that many. I'm in the FL Panhandle.

Yep, they always perch in a tree behind my house. Starting seeing them three days ago.

We see it every year around our house, but never this early. Normally it's August/September that we start seeing the big groups. It's a foraging behavior. Mississippi kites will hunt and even roost in large groups.

Just saw our first pair around the house today. They will soar just over the tops of the trees, and you can see that head swiveling as they are looking for prey. Cool birds.

I had a pair of swallowtails buzz my family today. They were probably 15 feet above us. They did multiple rounds just at tree top level. My two year old loved it. I’ve seen this pair for probably 10 years now. They are my favorite bird breed. Very cool to see.

I don’t see that many Mississippi kites here in Washington parish. The swallowtails are pretty prevalent though.

I saw what had to be over a hundred circling over my house Friday. I actually ran inside to get my wife. I have never seen anything like it.
