The older bucks can only breed so many does in a day. Their sperm is not unlimited. The young bucks get a piece of the action too

Thats not a bad thing though. If a 2.5 year old 14" 8 point is breeding a doe, that deer may still be a trophy caliber deer a few years down the road. His genetics are the same as a 2.5 year old as they will be when he is a 5.5 yr old stud. Genes dont change

Kinda like the nerd in the corner of the bar. He may not be the first choice, but it doesnt matter if sex is had

Off topic kinda but I imagine the 1.5 year old deer as the "sneakers". They wait until big boy is done and sneak in and get the scraps. Bluegill do this, but the sneaker males actually look like females so the males wont run them off. When the male leaves, he runs in and fertilizes the eggs of the females without the other bull bream knowing it

Kinda like those hipster figs in the back of the bar nevermind

I find it's the exact opposite. Deer down here are like fricking ghosts that don't respond to anything.

In MS I have called in deer using grunts, bleats, and rattles.

I've had excellent success with a doe bleat in NWLA. Mostly younger bucks, but my biggest ever came to one of those doe cans.

no other calls work for me though.

Ive flipped the doe can call a thousand times in SE Alabama and only twice in all those years can I definitely say a buck responded. I've gotten younger bucks to come to the grunt call, but also rarely.

Is some of this perceived lack of response due to a lack of visibility in thicker woods than they have in the Midwest? Probably. But I also think our deer just don't respond like they do up north due to some of the factors discussed in the thread.

(Doesn't stop me from flipping the can on slow mornings, though )

I wonder sometimes if I'm ruining my hunt trying a grunt or a can. That said, I'm much more likely to use a call when deer movement has been slow for a few days. Chances are I'm not really scaring many deer. There not around anyway.

I've always wanted to know how many deer hear the can call and don't respond. Or am I flipping it to empty woods.
