Has anyone else being seeing a record number of Pintail this year? Every hunt we will shoot our 1 per person then work groups all day. Any idea why they decided to drop the limit?

We had a ton of Pintails first split. I heard it was going back to 2 next season.

SW LA is having a dismal year. I made a trip passing through Elton, Kinder, South LC, Grand Lake, Little and Grand Chenier, across and back up through Cameron and Hackberry. It was the least amount of birds I had ever seen. Little to no birds visible in the fields, marshes, flying, or on open water. Just dismal.
My brother in law hunts somewhere around Morgan City apparently it isn’t much better there either.
I have friends that are slaughtering the birds in OK and North Texas just like it used to be here.

Not seeing any more Han during previous 5-6 years

Dropped because of fly way population numbers

Sat on catahoula lake this evening, literally seen thousands of ducks.

Some of the most dismal reports of the day are from cataboula. Unless you like divers....

Yes, reminds me of the golden years when they were a 10pt bird. Damn you Larry Reynolds! Huge drop in greys, huge increase in scaup and pins, relying heavily on teal for numbers.

I am jealous of you old school hunters who got to shoot 10 pintail and greys in a hunt. My grandfather told me tons of stories of days where they would shoot 10 birds a person and somehow they always need up shooting a mallard hen as the last bird. Must have been luck

I actually think the 6 bird limit is perfect. I just wish they would reassess the species limits

In Vermilion Parish sugarcane has definitely been a factor in decreased waterfowl habitat. Not the entire parish but some large areas that used to hold thousands of waterfowl for the winter have been put into sugarcane the last 3 years . Not blaming anyone for that but it has made a huge difference in the area on ducks and geese .

The most consistent and best piece of property I have ever hunted was a flooded cow pasture

But yea most people don't flood there cow pastures.

After this past week I would like to take back anything bad I may have said about duck hunting in this thread.

They did really well on marsh lease this weekend too. Weeks of no mud motors running around probably is the reason.

In closing, I think it's important to add the Louisiana duck season opens a month too early.

The last two weekends we smashed limits but we are hunting along the river in S. Delta. Ducks did not arrive there until the big freeze just before new years and still not big numbers until MLK day. The usual routine the last 3-4 years is the ducks don't get there until the late season (janurary).
