Yes I did have an indicator. Im probably sure I missed a few takes that I did not realize were happening.
Next time I am going to make a 2 or 3 day trip out of it, this was just a short 1 day run up there.

If you can swing it, get a one day guided trip next time. You sure can learn a lot that way. I like Dallys in Cotter.

I have had absolute monsters take it so subtle that the indicator (or dry fly acting as an indicator in a dry-dropper rig) just barely, and slowly dipped beneath the surface of the water. It's amazing how they can do that.

The closest trout waters to Shreveport/Bossier are the Little Missouri in Murfreesboro (2hr 45m) and Broken Bow (2hr 45m). I also want to take a guided trip to both of these spots since I can make day trips there on the weekends.
I still had a great time, chunked flies for 5 hours straight and just had a blast being there and doing it.
A few pics from Norfork. We fished the Handicap access point and upriver a little bit.

Does anyone here have experience fly fishing the Trinity River near downtown Dallas?
I will be there for a few days for work in late January and might have a day to slip off and fish.
I see that Tailwaters Fly Shop sits right on it so I can always stop in there and ask.

Took my little man for his first fly fishing trip this week to Dogwood Canyon outside of Branson.
It did not disappoint.

Anyone have tips on casting? I do fine when I'm practicing just fly line, but the second I tie on a leader and fly it's wind knots like crazy, line hitting the water in a pile, etc.

sounds like you're breaking your wrist causing a tailing loop.
On the end of the tippet tie on a little bit of yarn. Practice with a string wrapped around the butt of the fly rod and around your wrist so you're wrist won't break.
You may also be forcing the rod too fast.
Slow down your cast on both the back cast and forward. It really doesn't take much.

Try pausing on your back-cast longer. Let the line totally stretch out on your back-cast before moving the rod towards the target again. Typically, when the line totally straightens out will feel a little "tug" on your rod tip. Its hard to feel at first but pay attention, that is always the signal to begin moving the rod again.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Do any of you have experience with sink leaders (versileaders) run on a floating line versus buying a sink tip line and an extra spool?
Im in NWLA and there are a few creeks Id like to hit but my WFF line just doesnt get down deep enough.

What is a good website for used fly fishing equipment? I'm looking to add a 6wt to my arsenal. THis would be used to fish for slot reds. I may buy new, but i feel like fly fishing equipment is treated very well most of its life so used may be a good option.

theflyfishingforum.com has a nice categorized classified section.
You could also try a WTB thread on the r/flyfishing subreddit
ETA: There is also a ton of shite on ebay. Just set the price low to high and bust through the first few pages of $20 sweatshop reels.

Nothing major, but I finally caught a decent bass on the 5wt

Any of you guys fishing the Mission six fly fishing tournament out of PAC this Saturday? There are kayak and boat divisions. It’s a cool little tourney I fished last year. About 25 or so people in it.
I posted this in the kayak thread but I figured I’d post it here as well since there is a boat division too. Strictly fly fishing only for reds and sheephead. I believe proceeds go to support the local vets.

Did you fish the tournament?

I sure did. Since it is a Veteran's tournament, I brought a Marine buddy of mine. He has never casted a fly rod in his life and boy you could tell. The sun was out, but that was the only good part. The wind was blowing 20 and the water was chocolate in most places. We did however find fish. I poled to boat the entire day and set him up perfectly on about 6 or 7 good fish. He ended up hooking one in a very small outrun. The fish ran under the boat and popped off.
So we ended up with no fish but still had a good time hanging out catching a buzz and a tan. It was the most frustrating thing seeing all these fish and him just not being able to make a cast even remotely close to the fish. (the wind definitely didn't help any)
Looked like there were some nice fish weighted in but we didnt stick around. There were 2x as many boats as last year, which was great to see it growing.
My new 6wt rod was also broken that day.......
