The quintessential Sound of Summer

A noise shouldn't be able to amplify the heat, but somehow it does.

Seems like when the wind is blowing, they are quiet. When it's still as a statue, they get into shouting matches.

Cicadas are nothing compared to Katydid's.

We have one set up on one of my squash plants. I think she is using it for an ambush site.

Interestingly, there are no broods of periodicals this year, but some areas have 2026 stragglers. 2027 will be a year of the Baton Rouge brood. I'll probably drive down during peak, as I have only seen periodicals once. .

At least it isn't like last summer here in North AL.
Those damn things were everywhere and made more noise than I have ever heard in nature in my entire life. I'm 60 and don't remember ever having an invasion like last year's.

True.

Whenever I hear that sound I instantly think of the hottest days of summer, even when I hear them in a movie.

I started seeing them mid June. It freaks people out when I tell them I ride my mower through a nesting area with a100 or so flying around. They buzz around but pretty much ignore me. They’ve completely taken over the hill behind my deck.

Probably stragglers of the 2024 brood or southern edge of the 2025. None for anyone this year.
