Just got an email from TWRA:

quote:

Last year, in Unit CWD, deer harvest was significantly down. Without removing more deer from the landscape, CWD will continue to spread. Hunters can help! Help us in the fight against CWD by harvesting more deer this year. The fewer deer there are, the fewer CWD positive deer there are which will decrease disease transfer. We have expanded harvest incentives and allowed the use of firearms for more days. We tested over 15,000 deer last year in the affected area and over 90% of those tests came back negative. Let's keep the prevalence of CWD low by harvesting more deer this season.

New This Year for Unit CWD:
You can now use firearms, muzzleloaders, and archery equipment during the August 28-30 hunt in Unit CWD!

There is no limit to the number of bucks you can earn through TWRA's Earn-A-Buck program!

In Unit CWD, gun season will begin Saturday, Nov. 7 when the rest of the state begins
muzzleloader season.

The CWD unit is all the southwest counties in TN, FYI

That's a very unfortunate acronym when it comes to deer related matters.

So they have settled on CWD being caused by overpopulation or what?

Well, there are a ton of deer around here.

I read it as there weren't enough taken last year by hunters due to CWD.

It is basically giant deer farming operations at this point with and without fences. Everyone trying to have the most deer possible. A disease was bound to happen.

I figured CWD would cause less hunters and therefore less kills.

Seems like a good spot for the meme with the superhero trying to decide what button to push.
1 kill more deer which results in a smaller herd
2 don’t kill as many deer more deer die and a smaller herd

Holy hell batman what button do we push?!?

How fast can the test determine if a deer has CWD? Do you quarantine and process after cleared?

There are places that test automatically. If you process yourself they have guidelines.

quote:

To be as safe as possible and decrease the potential risk of exposure to CWD, hunters should take the following steps when hunting in areas with CWD:

Have your deer tested for CWD before eating it. If it tests positive, do not eat the deer.
When field-dressing or processing a deer:
Wear latex or rubber gloves
Minimize how much you handle the organs, particularly the brain or spinal cord tissues.
Do not use household knives or other kitchen utensils

This strategy was already tried by Wisconsin and it had no affect on the CWD spread besides decimating the buck population. I know multiple guys that were killing 10-15 bucks a year.
