While there is good info, it’s a lot to digest, especially in written form.

You’re not gonna suggest to someone who has never used a bait caster, to go buy a 7’6 heavy punching rod and a $220 reel, put on some 50lb braid and a 1oz jig and tell them to go flip grass beds and under docks and expect them to succeed.

There’s a lot of decent quality entry level fly fishing stuff available on the market to let you get your feet wet without spending $500 to find out if you like it or not, especially with important as technique is.

The fact $900 rods are even mentioned in this thread, for someone who might be interested in trying it, is laughable.

I know, right?

If I were the OP, I'd look at at 9' 6wt rod. That would let you fish bass and panfish, coldwater trout (if you ever got the chance), and light duty salt water (Sea trout and smaller reds).

Something like a Finwick Aetos,a Reddinton Path, Cabelas Synch or something similar.

Spend the rest of the $100 in your budget on flies, tippet, nippers and all the other little things that most folk don't take into consideration when starting out.

Good luck to the OP.

What kind of boat do you guys fish off of for reds in the marsh? Just a bay boat? flats boat with a casting platform? Aluminum flat boat with a big arse tower on the font? I have a Blackjack 256 with a T-top that I don't think would be ideal for this type of fishing. I've sort of been in the market for a second boat for getting into ponds and other shallower areas.

My new to me sled. perfect boat for fly fishing. You dont have to get a flats boat, but it sure does help. everthing has its place. plus they are super quite while stalking fish.

Tell Me About Fly Fishing

There is nothing that fly fishermen like more than talking about which crazy expensive piece of gear is the best.

Spoiler: it’s often whichever one they bought.

What boat is that? Must be fairly large to have an F90 pushing it.

Yup. It's people justifying their purchasing decisions by telling other people how great their gear is.

Spoiler: It will all catch fish in the right hands and in the wrong hands it won't catch as many....

Its a Man-O-war Skiff. There was only 8 of them made. 18' long, 495# hull. 83" beam. its a 2 stroke 90 which only weighs 265 pounds. that is comparable to the yamaha F70 which weighs in at 255# i believe. With 2 people and loaded down gear and ice, it drafts 7~8 inches.

I went used because I cant justify the price of a new skiff knowing that I'm rough on my equipment an just wouldnt treat a new boat right.

On the 1st. Tie a loop of line around the the reel of your rod and tie somewhat loosely around your wrist. You want it tight enough so that your wrist won't break.
Your arm and flyrod should for a straight line and almost pointing straight up.

or wear a long-sleeve shirt and tuck the butt end of the rod into the cuff of your shirt. was a helpful trick for me to learn to cast properly.

I have never seen a more true statement.

Side note, I just snagged a NIB Lamson Liquid 3.5 (8-9wt) for $76 shipped

FYI, just got an email from Allen Fly Fishing stating they have the Kraken reels 20% off this weekend. I bought one as an entry level saltwater reel and have enjoyed so far.

One thing to consider is a rod with a warranty. Some of the cheaper ones won’t replace them.
