My son-in-law invited me on a fishing trip this weekend.

“Don’t worry about a boat, rods or beer. I got you.”

I’ve never been up there but keep hearing “the fishing ain’t what it used to be.”

The fishing ain't what it used to be.

They put in carp to control the grass and devastated a lot of the cover. That said, I saw on FB that someone caught a 9 or 10 pounder there in the last week.

I went there a few times, did pretty good in the spring with Carolina rig lizards.I would catch 10-12 3 to 5 lbs. They were in the slot and I had to release them but it was fun.
What I read was the grass is coming back and the fishing is getting better. Also they did away with the slot, not sure why.

My auntie was the biologist in charge of caney, was her baby and she did make call on the grass carp. She’s actually a very smart lady, retired from La Wildlife and Fisheries after 20+ years in the Monroe office.

She recommended a small amount of carp on Caney. The property owners around the lake raised hell and made them put way too many in.

Grass carp wasn’t the only culprit. Flooding, spilling tons of chicken poop, created a huge algae bloom, killing most of grass hurt the bass fishing.
I fished it a ton during my years @ La Tech, always caught good fish. Plenty big girls there, just gotta work harder. Back of creeks still has grass, and where’s there’s grass, there’s bass...

Its a perfect lake to learn offshore fishing. Its pretty small and can be fished thoroughly in a week. Really helps when going to bigger lakes like Toledo. fish should be in all stages of spawn right now. I'm sure if conditions are right you could bed fish too.

While its not the most fun fishing that damn wacky rig senko is great under the deeper docks over there.

The “slot” was slot limit regulation that was enacted to protect certain size fish.On Caney the slot was 15-19 inches, those size fish had to be released immediately.Fish under 15 inches one could keep 8,over 19 inches could keep 1, I believe.Different lakes had different slots, some had 14-17 inch slots.
I looked up why they dropped the slot limit regulation, it was because people weren’t keeping the small fish. For a slot limit to work as intended the small fish should be removed to ensure enough food for the 15-19 inch fish to grow to trophy size.
Personally,I really liked slot limits.Anytime one can catch 10-12 fish over 15 inches is a good day.I kept the undersized fish (they’re the best eating) but I didn’t fish there enough to make a difference.

My game warden son in law said slot limits were put in because the lake was stocked with Florida bass that were brought in from Florida back in the day. Now the La. fisheries raise their own Florida strain and don't have to buy them, therefore no more slot. Local lake here had a slot also and was stocked with Florida bass, now no more slot.

Seems to be a common issue with our state wildlife agencies. I hope to live long enough to see another lake in Texas filled with hydrilla. Sorry about Caney lake.

cruise the banks slowly, with the warm weather this weekend the big ones will be bedding up in the backs of protected coves.

Fish the north bank, it warms quicker.

Main lake points are good this time of year, also hit docks.

swimming jigs, bladed jigs, senko, spinner bait, shad type crank baits should all work

Had some good trips there.

Caught some big ones flipping jigs under docks in dead heat of summer.

Also watched a guy catch a 11 or 12 lber by the bridge close to the old Browns landing. Picture was on the wall for a long time. May still be there.

Caney was such a perfect storm of circumstances that helped create an awesome fishery early on. The land for the lake was logged but the funds for the dam construction dragged behind....allowing tons of underbrush to grow up creating some insane cover.

The first day I fished it, we were running in 20’ of water and you could still see the tops of green willow trees. I remember when Dana Walker and a friend caught 5 bass that each weighed between 8 and 10 pounds.

It was crazy good.
