Tell me about 1972 Toyota Land Cruisers

My father in law collects classic cars but stuff like corvettes and hot rods, never into the 4x4 stuff. Well for the past few years I've been talking about wanting a 1972ish Bronco, I guess he doesn't like them because he's never talked to me about it. Anyway, he came over for Easter today and said, "I think I'm going to buy Cole (my unborn son, who will be here in 6 weeks) his first car." We were thinking a hot wheel or something...nope a 1972 Land Cruiser. He said it'd be cool for me and my son to work on it together.
Now I know nothing about them, but they look pretty cool. Anyone have any experience with them?

So in the year 2029 when all the kids will be getting new cars to drive your son will have a '72 land cruiser? I think that would actually be pretty sweet

Bulletproof rigs with one small, easily correctable flaw. Birfield joints instead of u joints at the axles. Forgot who sells them, but there used to be a conversion kit that made the cruisers dang near unbreakable
(I freely admit that I'm a stage 9 nerd for jeeps and the old FJs)
Be happy you have one! Would trade my wife's 07 Tahoe for a good one tomorrow if I knew she wouldn't kill me in my sleep
To summarize my novel posted above: I'm jealous, your dad-in-law is awesome, and restore it before your son can drive so you can enjoy it first!

a death-mobile for a young driver - no airbags, no collapsible steering column, head restraints, door beams... Horrible brakes, tips over, etc. Missing basically every safety improvement over the past 40 years.

Drove one a tan 1972 when I was 16 until I was 17 or 18. It's a daily struggle not to tip/flip that thing. I loved her but she was pretty worn and I could never get her up to 50 mph. Wish I still had her.

Nevermind, those are just rod ends. It'll come to me, but the ones I am thinking of have a legit lifetime warranty

Don't forget that the gas tank is under the passenger seat.
Driving something like this means you have to be VERY aware of your surroundings. I try to be extremely cautious when driving my rig.
ETA: The payback however is a vehicle that can motor around in the deep woods like a mountain goat and at the same time turn heads everywhere it goes. People come up and talk to me almost everytime I stop for fuel (which is often

Toyota actually still keeps an surprising number of parts in stock for these vehicles. I have spoken to Cruiser Dan at American Toyota many times.
