Correct. The weight sits on the bottom and your bait free floats.

Do you let the weight sit on the swivel or tie it above?

Also, the bead between the swivel and weight isn't necessary. I never use one on my Carolina rigs. Do yourself a favor and pre make some leader lines---hook, leader, and swivel before you go out, so you just have to make one knot to be ready to go when you're out there.

Ok, cool. And for the leader, what type of line?

Doesn't really matter, just get 20 or 30lb. I like 30, but it's not a big deal.

i use a split shot to keep the shrimp down, and to help with the cast. have gone without, and it is funny to watch the shrimp jump out of the water trying to escape a fish.

fishing with live shrimp

for reds? waste of bait. Just use gold spoons and plastic tipped with dead shrimp on a cork

Another question, I have a fairly new Shimano spinning reel. I put the line on correct and it works fine but every now and then when I cast and look at the spool, the line is loose around the reel. I'll have to let a good amount out and reel in again with some tension for it to wrap tight again. Is this normal?

Kahle hooks like everyone else said. Put em under a cork. It's a pretty simple set up and the reds will be feasting.

Hey guys, a few more questions.

If I am using the Carolina rig, what kind of hook and what kind of bait will I be using? Is this used for shrimp or plastics?

Also, can someone explain the concept of jig heads? When will this be a good method and with what kind of bait on it?

I'm impressed with all the legit comments in lieu of the smartass ones.

Carolina rig can be live shrimp on circle hook, doa shrimp on stock hook, or anything in between.

Jig heads are basically a weighted hook. Rig a cocahoe on those, and you can simply tight line(tie straight to your line), put under a cork, carolina rig it. pretty versatile
