I have a couple rifles I want to suppress for night time hog hunting. The rifles I have aren't fitted to allow a suppressor. Anyone recommends anybody specific to thread a barrel for a suppressor and a rough cost on how much that job is?

Also, open to other calibers to suppress. Just want something next to silent.

Thanks,

I've been convinced to spend the money and get a 300 blackout.

Use a raw potato like they did on The Wire.

Something to think about, if you haven't already, is whether or not there is enough material at the muzzle to support the threads and shoulder you need. If the rifles have bull barrels you're probably OK, if the barrels are "sporter" tapered there may be an issue.

It's a Remington speedmaster with a regular sized 22 barrel

Barrel width shouldn't be an issue. However, in looking up pictures I see there is a version with a front sight that would probably have to be reloacted and a version where the front sight post is far enough away from the muzzle to not be an issue.

May need to be moved:

Wouldn't be an issue:

just curious, do you already own suppressor(s) ?

Barrel threading will range from $75 to $125 depending on the GS or shop.

To me, it usually makes more sense to put that money towards a new, factory threaded, rifle.

No, I don't. This will be my first time purchasing one. I have a 17 I'd rather suppress but from what I gathered during research, it doesn't quiet the rifle that well. And I plan on putting a thermal scope on it for night time pig hunting so removing the front sight won't be an issue

I've thought about buying a new rifle but don't see the reason to if I already own one. $125 is cheaper than a new rifle

The only problem is you have to slow the bullet down so much. I don’t know if I’d shoot a hog with a 22 going less than 1200 FPS. Ours is much more quiet when you use the right load but it’s def slow.

I have a buddy with a suppressed ruger American 22. Its dead quiet and he just recently put the hammer down on some pigs with it. He put it behind the shoulder. Also, he was hunting in a field so he could watch them die 20 yards away.

I’m not saying don’t get it. I’m just saying that they aren’t really that quiet with reg ammo. I’m sure you can kill anything with a well placed shot.

Ive thought about buying a new rifle that shoots a larger bullet but I was impressed with the quietness of his setup.

Had some guys at the gun range a few weeks ago that had a suppressed .22. It was pretty quiet. You could hear the bullet hitting the target like a pellet gun. That also plays into the slowness of the bullet.

My question is, does suppressing a rifle really help with hogs? In my experience, they run after one shot even if it's suppressed. My only chance at a second shot is if a few young ones come back in afterward.

Unless it's subs, a regular .22lr out of a rifle silencer or not will have a pretty loud crack from the bullet breaking the sound barrier.

.22 subs will be around 1000 fps out of a rifle and will not crack.

very few (if any) .22lr will reach super sonic out of a pistol.

A .22 will certainly kill hogs.

A .22 is best used to kill hogs by shooting just behind the ear.

I would expect all but the smallest of hogs shot behind the shoulder with a .22 at supersonic speeds to run away and most likely survive.

This is an excellent excuse to suppress something much bigger.
