Wear insect repellant. Deet usually works ok for chiggers, but if you're really serious use permethrin.
And, contrary to popular belief, the chiggers aren't burrowed into your skin, so there's no use trying to "smother" them. It's just like a skeeter bite.

Hey, I'm not saying fingernail polish doesn't do anything. A lot of people swear by it. It's not suffocating chiggers though. May be a placebo effect?

Only thing that feels better than scratching chigger bites is dragging athletes foot across carpet

best thing to treat that I have found is extra strength Benadryl itch stopping gel. regarding treatment to avoid, old forestors swear by mixing sulphur powder and baby powder in a sock and then dusting cloths before going into the woods.

This, with pants tucked into boots or taped tightly to help prevent them coming up your legs.
Once they've chewed you up, sometimes a bath with lots of baking soda in the water will help stop the itching (until you start scratching them again).

Add a few cups of bleach to a bathtub filled with water and sit in it for 20-30 minutes.
