Two navel trees and a lemon were hit hard by cold in the Alexandria area. Not a single leaf on any of the trees right now. They've survived hard cold before this year.

Should I continue to wait, or are they done?

Probably gone. I lost both my blood oranges this winter. No foliage and the limbs are dry and fragile. My lemon and satsuma survived though. Didn’t cover this winter just gave them my best wishes. FWIW the improved Meyer lemon variety is incredibly hardy.

Send LSUAg center an email and ask them for advice.
You were probably hit harder than us further south.

Thanks for the responses. Many of the limbs have a little green below the bark, so a sliver of hope. If no leaves in next couple weeks, I'm pulling up and planting new.

If I can find a local supplier for the Orange Frost Satsuma, I'll go with that. Developed by aTm, it's supposedly hardy down to 10 degrees. Can't imagine we'd ever get colder than that.

Dan Gill says:

Citrus trees vary in their degree of cold tolerance. From the most cold hardy to the least cold hardy it goes: kumquat, satsuma, orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime.

they gone, if they sprout anything at all after all this time, it will just be the base shrub growing that the tree was grafted to. the fruit tree part of it is dead.

plant new trees now while its still the right time to get them started and established

Caj! I googled your user name and found you here. What happened to BigSteelKeg forum? Is it dead?

This was the coldest winter i remember in 55 years living in La. Several winters were spent abroad so I may have missed something. I have seen a night or two here and there where it got as cold, but there was a solid week there of some crazy cold weather. In Baton Rouge we had pipes freeze on a 12 year old house that never froze. Didn't loose any citrus, but the extra wet and cold winter did in some plums, figs and other small fruit trees. I think the extra wet more than anything, they were stressed over the summer and the cold finished them off.

Jeff -

My grapefruit trees lost all leaves within 2 days of each other right after the freeze... along w a young lemon tree. Grapefruit made a miraculous recovery and are all leaved.... the Lemon is still bare. My wife swears its alive, although even showing signs of a dead limb or 2. Give it time. I bet it recovers.

My citrus survived with minimal dead loss. However, I haven't seen any buds on my lemon or lime. When should that occur? The orange and satsuma have budded and set fruit. (All trees are 5 years old and under)
