Check out BamaBass on YouTube. He has a playlist detailing his journey from a 55gal tank with 2 bass to a 300gal tank.

Spend a little money and get an outside filtration system .

Also be sure to get a bottle of whatever you prefer to neutralize tap water . It’s full of chemicals that are bad for fish . Goldfish are tough and an easy starter .

I kept one going for the better part of a year and a half. Some fish died but most of them stayed alive. Eventually I let it run its course because I just got tired of dealing with it. It’s not that it was necessarily a ton of work I thought it was just something else to have on the to do list that wasn’t worth it. I loved having it while I wasn’t having to clean it and everything though. It was nice to look at.

Really if you’re at the point where you don’t mind sacrificing an hour or so of your weekend every week I didn’t find it that difficult to maintain. I kept a dwarf gourami, a couple platies, and a few guppies.

I had a bass kept in an aquarium when I was a kid. You could float a bag of cold fish on top of the water and he'd smack it hard! The fish was an absolute pig. He only weighed about a pound but he would eat 10 gold fish in under a minute. If 3 were left swimming, he'd be out of breath from gorging himself but would still round up the remaining three goldfish and just swim around the tank with them in his mouth.

I later on added a blue gill to the mix. He was by far meaner than the bass and would chase the bass non stop around the tank. Had to remove him.

There's some African cichlids that are very neat to keep. They look almost like saltwater aquarium fish. Some can be aggressive but you can spread aggression by somewhat overcrowding the tank. Look into demasoni and labidochromis (yellow labs)

A 40 gallon tank with a load of Texas holey rock with demasoni and yellow lab cichlids makes for a beautiful and active tank

When you are done watching the tank videos, look for his videos detailing him building his 5 acre pond at the farm. It is pretty incredible.

Idk wtf that guy does for a living but he has pumped some money into that place.

Here's a good tip.
Don't do it.

aquarium's are a pain in the arse that require routine attention that you are going to get tired of giving it to.

Don't listen to any of these sissies.. Set it up with the correct ph for Cichlids then put rocks and cover on both ends. Get a few Jack Dempseys and a few Jewelfish. It's like watching West Side Story in your tank.

We have 3 male dwarf gourami in a 10 gallon tank. They are pretty fun to watch at feeding time. They look like puppies waiting on the food to hit the bowl.

Well that was a rabbit hole

Dude has quite the setup. Here I am pinching pennies of a 40 gal aquarium and this dude just builds a mansion of a pond. I suck at life

He usually posts his 5 acre pond build videos on Sundays. I’ve been watching the entire series and really look forward to seeing them. He does a great job explaining what he’s trying to do.

The biggest mistake most people make is putting too many fish in their tanks...

I set up a tank for my stepdaughter years ago, and the fish kept dying. I researched everything and thought I was doing everything right, tried different types of fish, but they just kept dying. Then one day I walk in her room and she has a fish in her hand and she’s petting it. Mystery solved.

So my advice is don’t pet the fish.

I wanted to ask, when cycling the aquarium, if I plan on having live plants in there, I need to put them in there first, correct?

Plecos are some of my favorite fish. They’re super interesting and will help keep your tank clean,

This is an aquarium myth. They do nothing to keep a tank clean. They are one of the biggest waste producers in the hobby in regards to the fish people keep.

I like them and have had them in my aquariums but they are the opposite of keeping your tank clean.

Im down to 1 tank inside which is a 75 gallon and it requires about 20 minutes of attention per week.

To the OP,

The bigger the better when it comes to aquariums. Theyre easier to take care of in terms of quality control. The water in a bigger tank is less susceptible to large changes in water quality when doing weekly water changes.

Thanks Jones

We aren’t trying to do anything major over here. Just something for my son to keep the fish alive that he catches

I gotcha. Just be careful with native fish. Surprisingly, many are over aggressive
