I did Google recently.

Is it something you can cut out of the meat?

I don't think they really affect the meat. But, I'll never know, because I'm not skinning a squirrel that has one.

I don't know anything about bot fly larvae other than they're disgusting.

As far as being dangerous to humans (for whomever asked) you only have to worry about the flies depositing offspring on you. The gross maggots that are already in another animal are no danger, other than the aforementioned risk of vomiting to death. And, honestly, I'm not even sure if the species we have in the US even use humans as hosts.

Anyway, didn't mean to derail the thread. I'm looking forward to shooting some squirrels myself.

Truer words were never spoken. The thought of them evacuating from underneath the skin of a freshly killed squirrel makes my stomach turn. Hence the reason I no longer hunt them this early in the year.

i said the same and used to pay someone but last year i went over 100 squirrels on the season so I made myself become respectably efficient at it and it's not bad. Have to do it right away, if they get cold, gameover lol

Called worbels. Larvae of the bot fly. Only ever ran across them in tensas. We killed 16 squirrels and 14 had worbels. I thought I could stomach it but when I pulled my eight out of my bag when I got back to camp. The worbels had crawled out the squirrel and were in my bag. Couldn't eat the squirrel after that even though I know they are external.

Not something you'd eat by accident.

Hot, dry, windy and a full moon. I'm usually good for 6-8 but will be happy with 3 or 4 tomorrow.

They're moving more in the afternoon with the full moon.

I've killed hundred of squirrels and don't recall ever seeing any with wolves. Rabbits are another story. I've killed some that we're covered in them. I won't hunt a rabbits until after a good frost. Squirrels I'm blasting.

Easy to clean. Cut cross way through the skin halfway down the back. Insert fingers and pull. Chop off head. Chop off tail. Gut and rinse. Flour it up and get the dumplings going.

That's the hard way.

Cut them right above the butthole, stand on the tail, pull

you gotta pluck the hairs off the ol bunghole. Catfish skinners help w that little back half of hide.

I don't remember ever plucking any butt hairs

I do remember having as much hair on the meat as I had on the hide when I cut them down the back

Yeah, shouldn’t have to do that. Cut below the tail, step on it and pull, but not all the way at once. Then pull off from the back and then finish pulling over the front.

Guns were raddling the glass on the gun case this morning. Just didn't have it in me to go.
