Several months ago just before our last trip to Alaska, my 11 yr old boy asked if I would help him build a bird feeder that would hold "lots and lots of bird seed".

I figured, "why not", and we made it a little project and got 50 lbs of cheap bird seed.

I tried to counsel him that he needed to hang it higher, or else squirrels will get to it.

He tells me it's for the squirrels. The little shite is baiting squirrels. (I should've known better with that kid)

Fast forward 3 months, we're back in Texas and he takes his first round of fox squirrels.

Very interesting observations.

1) The hides are quite pliable and easier to work
2) There is a pronounced fat content under the skin
3) The meat is much lighter than normal. It has a chicken-like appearance
4) Meat was more tender than normal

I never knew diet could alter the meat quality to THAT degree. Food for thought.

Fox's are a bit harder to clean then gray or cat's. I hope you are removing the glands in the arm pits before cooking. By doing that, the meat is more better tasting.

As for as baiting, oh well.

I've been eating squirrel for many a moon, and I have to admit that I've never heard of anything to do with glands on a squirrel.

Any tips / insights?

Being outsmarted by a little kid has been a regular occurrence since he was 4-years old.

Of my 5 kids, this one is special in that way.

Congrats on the future green jeans! 2 of my best 'outlaw' friends are now game warden's in Texas and are great at it.

I don't mean to imply that your son is an outlaw, just like his ingenuity...

Couple more and you'll have enough for a squirrel skin hat. For real though, what do you do with the hides?

Also,

We always targeted cat squirrels and stayed away from the foxes just because they were tougher. I've never heard about a gland that should be removed.

A squirrel is a squirrel is a squirrel. Cut 'em up and cook 'em down. I'm not going to pass on a plump juicey fox squirrel.

I'm not saying we didn't kill the occasional fox squirrel... we just hunted bottoms and killed more cat squirrels. Always seemed to see fox squirrels in pines up on the ridges as you walked in or out.

Thereby, we "targeted" cat squirrels by mostly hunting bottoms. If any of that above makes sense.

But the fact remains that I do have reel him in all the time. The kid is part Cajun or something. You should've seen him ambush and kill a gopher with a curtain rod after I took away his shotgun. The stories go on and on with this kid.

Luckily in this instance, Fort Bend County has a year-round open season, no bag limit, any method county....only one like that (due to pecan industry).

Go on. I'll need to trap some Dove to help train my Boykin.

I bet I have skinned a thousand squirrels in my day and I have never heard of a gland on a squirrel.

When I was a kid, my dad and his brothers used to have competitions to see how many squirrels they could kill in a season. The winner was always over 300. But that was when the woods were actually hardwoods.

Lymph nodes under the armpits can be enlarged especially pending diet on bigger fox squirrels. NOT good eats. I pull 'em.

btw.....you are raising those kids right!
