And I always assume a higher level of handling for handguns because of these facts AND the inherent potential for things to go horribly wrong more easily.

sadly, i have to call my dad (79yr olds) on stuff pretty often. driving down the road with his 7mag off safety, one in the chamber.

pulls up next to me on the 4 wheeler with the damn thing pointed at my face.

i know dang well he climbs in his stands with a loaded gun, no matter what i try to tell him.

but how do you stop it with your pops that taught you all about hunting. i am just always on high alert any time we get around he and his hunting rifle.

not an easy situation.

I have family that lives up there so I have a place to stay. Also, after making tat rip several hundreds of times, it doesn't seem that long after awhile.

suggesting that someone shoot a high powered rifle up in the air = not a good decision.

what goes up must come down.

A fella up on Amish country decided to discharge his muzzle loader in the air to clear out the ball/powder...about a month later he realized that he had killed a little amish girl that was riding in a buggy when his bullet came down over 3 miles away.

i.e. shite happens. fire into the ground

Fair enough. This was on a 4700 acre ranch in West Texas. The only thing that bullet had a chance of hitting was Texas. Also, that's rocky country, so the odds of something bad happening are exponentially higher when shooting into the ground, in the dark, than they are shooting into the air.

But I was asking Mr. Wonderful. The guy that posted this on the OT.

I don’t know the backstory but it appears the cop was in the dude’s driveway of his home. If so, simply ask the officer to see his warrant. If he can’t produce one, kindly ask him to leave. If he doesn’t, shoot the cop for trespassing. Case closed.

But I'm a "jackass".

When young and inexperienced, I have been corrected.
Now that I have (somewhat) matured, I have advised others on safety.

Game wardens come into the blind and checks our guns. They were loaded. One of the wardens unloads our guns and gives back to us without it breached. Pump shotguns.

I wasn’t raised around guns, so I never learned any type of gun safety until I bought my first one in my 20s. After I picked it up I watched about 100 YouTube videos on safety and range etiquette, practiced loading, unloading, disassembly, and reassembly, and dry fired a ton of times before I ever even purchased ammo for it.

Given that, nothing pisses me off more than blatant safety violations when I go out or to the range, especially knowing that 9/10 of the offenders have likely grown up around firearms.

I have a few times at the honey island range. Once this young guys AR jammed. He went behind the range to start trying to clear it, with the muzzle pointed at everyone on the line.

Another time there, they called the rifle range cold. The shotgun range officer apparently was new or senile. I was changing out my target 100 yards down range when I started getting peppered. I don't think I ever yelled so loud at someone in my life. The range officer working the shotgun line didn't understand that he needed to go cold when the rifle line goes cold.
