Spin-off - How Many of You Have Corrected Someone for Gun Safety Violation ?
Spin-off from a thread on another board: How many of you have corrected someone (a stranger) for a gun safety violation ?

Some folks are reluctant to do this - others (like me) don't hesitate to do so. I always do it politely (but firmly and immediately) if someone at the range gets careless and sweeps me with the muzzle of their gun.

I will do it in a heartbeat. I was at the range when a “cease fire/ cold range” was called. Young guy with his AR didn’t open the action or put his gun on safety and just left the rifle on the table. I jumped his arse for it. People are changing targets with a hot weapon pointed down range. Guy ended up leaving and I may have embarrassed him but there’s no room for that.

Did it to a LEO on a train tressel off westend blvd a couple days after katrina. They had tons of glory boys standing around with AR's and one was sweeping everyone doing work moving people into our boats. After the second sweep i politely asked him in drill sargent tone to STOP. Got a few attaboys for that one because others had noticed but wouldn't say anything.

Ive honestly never been around a stranger with a fire arm. The few times i went to an actual range, it was only me and people who came with me. I typically go shoot at my family's property instead. Avoid having to deal with any dangerous idiots. But i would have no problem saying something to someone i didnt know if they were using unsafe practices.

In a heartbeat. Politely the first time. Not so politely the second.

Funny story. Hunted with a good buddy that was not raised around guns or my dad. He comes out of the woods right at dark and is going to get in the jeep without unloading his gun. I ask him to unload, so he starts cycling the bolt letting the rounds drop to the ground. He gets four out and then nothing ejects, so he thinks he's done. My dad always taught us to count our rounds so we would know how many we had in the gun. It was a compulsion of mine and I knew his gun held five rounds, so I told him his gun still had a round in the chamber. He laughs and starts to climb in the jeep, bolt closed and off safety. I stop him and said try again. He humors me and works the bolt a couple of times (too dark to see the round) and says, see I told you. I said, you only got four rounds out. There's still one in the gun. Humor me one more time by pointing the gun in the air and pulling the trigger. He laughs, points the gun skyward and BOOM! The guy literally pissed his pants, but learned a valuable lesson.

Good for you! You would think a LEO would be trained better and know better. I was in a gun store in the Houston area a while back and the salesman was pointing out a divot in the floor and a hole in the ceiling to another customer. I join in the conversation and he explains that they were caused by a ricochet from a customers weapon. The guy he's telling this to says, "What kind of dumbass does it take to discharge a loaded weapon in a store?" The salesman says, "It was a cop!" He probably didn't deserve my sympathy, but I felt bad for the cop because they have to report any accidental discharge of their weapon. I'm sure he's never lived that one down.

made a post years ago here about one of my employees bringing his new handgun in to my office to show it off.

He ejected the mag and handed the gun to me. I racked it back and ejected the chambered round. I locked the slide back and handed him both back and said something to the effect of "That's how you hand someone a firearm." I was pissed off so I didn't say it nicely.

I took a father and son from Venezuela duck hunting in North LA (free trip) so they could kill their first greenhead. I spent the entire hunt making sure they were engaging their safety after shooting. The father told me they don't use the safety in Venezuela that their finger is the safety. They are now family friends of ours and I hope I made a lasting impression on them about gun safety.

I do not hesitate. I've grabbed a gun out of a buddy's hand more than once.

And I reported the guy who was my first concealed carry instructor. Thought he had a dummy gun pointing at everyone and messing with it. Turns out it was a new pistol. He passed both the gun and live ammunition around the class.

Half the people In it had never handled a gun before.

I was in the Army for 30 years, 9 months and 2 days (unless you want to be technical about it, then it's 30 years, 9 months and 5 days), so more than you can imagine, dawg.

I have never used the safety button on a gun. Ever

Well, using it is one thing. It's even wise if you're putting a long gun down for a moment or passing it through a fence (IF YOU INSIST ON DOING SO WITH A LOADED WEAPON) - as long as rule number 1 is observed, there is still a reasonable element of safety.

However - relying on any mechanical safety to make up for shortcomings in any other areas (muzzle not pointed at anything you do not intend to destroy, finger off trigger until ready to fire, no weapon is cleared unless you did it and even then it's not cleared, etc.) is de facto negligence.

Quite a bit. I don't mind speaking, and I've taken a gun away from more than one.

No chambered rounds for me when handing over guns or maneuvering.

Handguns are always loaded and carried. So that's different.
