On the 2nd and 4th bullet, do you see the little raised brass "belt" on the base? That's it.
Not sure why it's there, I assume it's because of the higher pressures in a magnum round.

Sure, but I know there's a picture like the one on the .308 fam.

45-70
45 is bullett diameter, in the original loading, 70 was for 70 grain of blackpowder.

To further elaborate on the 45-70 concept, the second number was indeed the grains of powder, but at that time it was black powder. Took a lot more black powder then modern smokeless powder.

I remember reading that the belt serves no purpose.

Not sure if someone has already touched on this but .410 is thought to have been a converted shotgun from a bore rifle. That's why it's not a measure like other shotguns. If it were it would be a 68 gauge or something like that.

Truth. The belts no longer serve any purpose.

I have heard numerous times that a .40 is essentially the same thing as a 10mm. Is that true?
Posted on 6/28/12 at 8:17 pm to jsb29
Not exactly. The .40 is what they came up with to deal with the fact that the FBI couldn't handle the recoil from the 10mm.
Posted on 6/28/12 at 9:47 pm to jsb29
I have never heard that, but I have never loaded pistol ammo and tend to err on the side of tissue displacement when choosing pistol calibers (45 acp).

After a quick look, no. The 10mm>40 s&w, at least in terms of fps/energy. The FBI recoil comment males sense.

Pretty good people around here seeing as not one person made fun of the dude. The OT would have killed him.

.40 SW is basically a 10mm short, like the 380 is a 9mm short

That is the way it appears, jack. Good analogy.
