I always hear the different gun sizes but I'm not quite sure what they mean. .22, .357, .38 special, 9 mm, 12/20 gauge, etc. Yeah, I didn't grow up around firearms but I'm looking into buying a few and taking classes.

The "size" is the cailber of the gun. A .22 is a small pistol used for squirrel hunting where as a .357 is going to blow your brains out. All the ones you listed (other then the 12/20g) are pistols.

In rifles and pistols, the smaller the number, the smaller the bullet is.
.17 < .22 < .243 < .270 < .300 etc...

In shotguns, the smaller the number, the bigger the shell and shot are

20ga < 16 ga < 12ga < 10 Ga

Caliber is the diameter of the bullet.

Most are measured in inches (.357, .308, .45, .44), but some are measured in MM (9mm, 7mm, 6mm etc).

The ones in inches obviously generated in the US, and the others internationally.

To add to what others have said, a .38 is just measured in inches whereas a 9mm is measured in the metric system (really depends on the round's place of origin as to how it's denoted...kind of annoying.)

The caliber references the bore/diameter of the round, but it's not always the actual measurement.

An interesting thing to look at that will give you a better perspective, is the family of cartridges using the same case. .243, 7mm-08, .308 etc and 25-06, .270, .280, 30-06 etc. I am sure there are others.

You could make this guy's head explode with all that shite.

Will be hard to learn over the internet.

I'd recommend starting off with your basic handgun calibers...
9mm (.355) - pretty much smallest I'd go for personal defense
.38 Special
.380 ACP
.40 S&W
.44 Magnum
.45 ACP

Then you're basic rifle calibers...
.223 Remington (pretty much the same as 5.56x45mm NATO)- AR15 Round
Standard Whitetail Deer Rounds below
.243 Winchester
.270 Winchester
.30-30 Winchester
.30-06 Springfield
.308 Winchester

Then you have the magnum rifle calibers (more powder)...
7mm Remington Magnum (.264)
.300 Winchester Magnum

Shotguns
.410 - Squirrels, Rabbits
28 Gauge - Squirrels, Rabbits, Dove
20 Gauge - Squirrels, Rabbits, Dove, other birds
16 Gauge - all of the above and deer, duck
12 Gauge - same as 16 gauge, + turkey and geese
10 Gauge - same as 12 gauge

(can you tell I'm bored at work )

In shotguns, doesn't the number have to do with the number of pellets? IOW, 20 guage has 20 pellets per something. 12 guage has 12 pellets per something? Therefore, the lower number equals larger pellets?
