Whelp I snapped a bolt off when i was tightening down the cover for the thermostat. I didn't think it would be too big of a deal, I went out and bought a left handed (extractor) bit and figured i would back it out. Whelp I ended up snapping that bastard off in it as well. I'm thinking that i probably need to drop it off at a mechanic and get them to pull it out for me. Has anyone else done this before? Also, anyone know of a mechanic that would come to the house and get it out?

Its on a 2005 Yamaha 225 VMAX HPDI.

If its broken inside get a small drill bit and en eze out screw extractor

Or jsut drill it out and retap it to a different size bolt

That's bad.

That's considerably worse since those are hardened steel.

I'd try getting a set of quality left-hand drill bits and attempt to drill them out hoping the bit will grab enough to back out the stuck pieces. At worse you'll be paying a someone to drill and put in a threaded insert to repair what you tried to fix...

Is it snapped of flush? If not, you can get some vice grips on it and turn it that way, use some pb blaster and a heat gun will aide in the removal. If it is flush you’ll have to use an easy out or drill it out and tap it.

Yeah its recessed in a hole. I have an easy out set but they are too big to fit in to the recessed hole to use them. My only option is a left handed bit.

You can try a drill bit , screw extraction set. It’s probably a 5mm screw, I would use a #40 drill bit and extractor and let it soak and heat the piss out of it. And if that fails drill and tap it would probably be the only option.this is what I’m talking about if your not familiar, just google drill bit/screw extraction set...

Leave that one out and see if the rest of them are enough to keep it from leaking. Now that theres an ez out broke off in there youre in a pretty shitty situation. Depending where it is and how rigid the cover is it might be fine minus a bolt.

Can you get a heat gun on it or is it too tight with other stuff?

I did the exact same thing, took it to a mechanic who finally got it out with a little heat. He told me Never do that again. He also noted he uses 1/4 drive ratchets and doesn't force it.

I thought you were talking about in your house. Would be a frickin solid home if it has bolts holding the thermostat in

It’s only a thermostat housing...no need to get gorilla on those bolts. Just did both mine this weekend...cool that there were sacrificial anodes inside the housing that I replaced as well.

Go to your local car dealership and ask them who they use to get out twisted off manifold bolts. Most of the dealerships I know of do not employ anyone competent enough with a TIG welder to get these bolts out. They normally use a guy that travels around to dealerships once a week doing just this thing.

So in short find someone who is good with a TIG welder and they will build the bolt back up with weld until they can get vise grips on it and twist it out. The twisted off drill bit complicate this though.

The best broken bolt removal, on and aluminum block was done by a first class welder. He took a smaller bolt, his tig torch and welded the smaller bolt onto the broken bolt. The heat help loosen the stuck bole and he backed it in nothing flat. Block and bolt are dissimilar metals and could be corroded in the hole. Good luck...

take it to an automotive machine shop and pay them $100 to do it.

Move to next project.

ETA: There's one on Airline 1/2 mile south of the new Woman's Hospital, same side, easy to find.
